    past it & already seen

They may well be past it, but I've never seen Morrissey, Devo, the Stone Roses, Ringo, or Weezer, so I'd rather see them on a cash-in tour than not at all. I'm still immensely happy that Black Francis needed to feed his 945 children, so the Pixies played here three times in 2010.

I almost bought tickets to Kendrick Lamar and then got all wishy-washy about it and then he sold out, so I suppose that one's out. But I also forgot Fred Wesley. I'm still tossing that one up. Just how funky IS he? Hrm.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Summer Live, in reply to Steve Parks,

just the thought of mingling with a bunch of chardonnay-swilling yahoos!

Well, yeah. But no matter the venue there's always going to be some douche to spoil your fun. The dudes talking loudly over the band about their weekend plans at the Kings Arms are always really annoying too. I did not come here to listen to you! I came here to listen to the band! Shut up!

a little reminiscent of The Pixies

Is it what. (You had me at that.)

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Summer Live, in reply to Sacha,

But Elvis Costello in a vineyard? Just doesn't seem right

he's about as challenging as Van Morrison by now, surely?

He's been playing vineyards in the USA for years although I usually hate those crowds. The Imposters are a good band. I've seen them... four times?... and they still have some surprisingly badass moments (it's really all about Pete Thomas). Also I am WAY more scared of Van Morrison than Elvis. What a grumpy bugger. :)

I am pretty sure the Spinning Songbook is not coming here. Which is why I'm going to Sydney to see it. Because I am nuts.

Russell, it's too late now, but those vineyard show seats are a bit of a waste of money - you can get so close to the stage on the sides that GA is just as good. Plus more flexibility with wandering about.

I seem to have accumulated tickets to Morrissey AND Devo (I think one will have to be sacrificed), Weezer, Elvis here, Elvis in Sydney, Pretty Lights, Ringo (yikes, that will be a cheesefest), Neil Young, and Wilco. Will definitely go to the Stone Roses too. Have I missed anyone? :)

    Do tell.

That post made me start mentally singing a Tori Amos song. Uncool, inexplicable complaining guy. UNCOOL.

  • Field Theory: The Force will be with…, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

I’m not his biggest fan, but really?

I've only seen Breaking the Waves and that was quite enough. I mean, I... enjoyed?... it, and I still can't hear "Life on Mars" without thinking about it, so obviously there's artistic merit involved, but lord. I think I've decided that I don't need that kind of emotional sucker-punch pretty much ever again. (You know that documentary From the Journals of Jean Seberg, which noted that a bunch of 60s/70s directors seemed really keen on casting their wives in sexually problematic/tortured roles? That always comes to mind when I think of Lars Von Trier.)

Oh yeah, Star Wars. I grew up in a Star Trek home (to boldly go, people. TO BOLDLY GO) so Star Wars was less of a thing to me than it was to many of my contemporaries. I think I may not have seen them until they came on TV in the 80s, but I do enjoy them, particularly IV and V (in their original format, fuck the added FX. And fuck Jar Jar). Also: Han Solo becomes more and more appealing the older I get. Dayum.

  • Hard News: The Velvet Underground Etc.,

I feel a bit guilty for not caring very much about record shops closing. I hardly ever go into them nowadays, and I used to spend HOURS in them in my teens and twenties. I just don't have the browsing desire any more when there's, like, the internet. Pity about Marbecks though.

    Knowledge need not be known.

    It's knowledge, bro.

(I can't believe no one said that yet.)

  • Hard News: Party on, dudes, in reply to Emma Hart,

I have to confess that a) I don’t remember this at all

Neither! (I have a *terrible* memory for arguments with people I don't know very well. Also - and this sounds bad, kinda - I've had so many of those sorts of discussions that they all blur into one big "someone is wrong on the internet" recollection.)

    the Mortgage Slut thread

The do what now? Was I involved in that?

  • Hard News: Party on, dudes,

This is the site that allowed me to properly re-engage with New Zealand after living in the USA. I've been reading Hard News since I was a graduate student staying awake too long via... artificial means... and now I'm a boring nearly-middle-aged mother of two in Auckland's very outer suburbs, and it's still a part of my life. Thanks Russell, and all you peeps.

(I feel a bit jazzed about my "Since Nov 2006" too. I'm O.G. Heh.)
