Four and two years olds do not always listen, let alone preschoolers on bikes zooming off at warp speed. It shows a true lack of judgement to take them into the city.
The number of children on bikes on Wellington's waterfront argues against this. I personally wouldn't think twice about taking my kids (5 and 2) into the city to learn to ride; the WCC has a cycling map that specifically recommends the concourse by the stadium as a good traffic-free area. Certainly, I feel a lot happier about taking the kids to a large, flat, traffic-free area - such as the waterfront - rather than having them cycle around our neighbourhood, until they have better control skills.
And if the situation slipped out of my control, it would be my fault for biting off more than I can chew, not a four year old's fault for being a four year old.
And I agree. I just take exception to the idea that taking kids somewhere public to learn to ride their bikes reflects poor judgement. Taking three preschoolers out by yourself is always possible to slip into "more than you can chew", bikes or no.
Get 'em on wheels early is what I say. Now, if you'll pardon me, I'm off to buy my youngest daughter a running bike for her 2nd birthday on Friday.

Does it seem a bit strange that a reasonable parent should take his four-year old and two-year old biking in the middle of the city?
No. No, it doesn't.

But back to gin.
A few years ago, I happened to be in Plymouth and so visited the Plymouth Gin distillery (there's not much else to do in Plymouth, apart from sailors). I did the distillery tour. You know how when you go to a brewery, they do that whole thing about the long, involved process, each step of which contributes to the delicate, complicated final flavour? Or a whisky distillery tour, same rigamarole but even more mystique? Well, the gin distillery tour consisted of them admitting that they buy in some form of pre-distilled but tasteless spirit, then dilute it and add the botanicals to flavour it. Takes about a fortnight, apparantly.
Since then I've been a lot less impressed with the mystique of gin. I mean - if that's how you make the _good_ stuff, what must the process for the cheap end be like?

I have to say but just what is the big deal about anybody getting married, as compared with just living together
Legal benefits: inheritance, visiting rights in hospital, right to be considered next of kin (with power of attorney etc), plus just wanting to be equal with everyone else...
Personally, I favour the elimination of marriage as a legal concept. No, really, I'm not kidding. If you want a religious ceremony, go nuts; but if we want to have a state-sanctioned bond between partners (with various legal ramifications), then let's just do that and drop all the semi-religious stuff. The current system is obviously heading in that direction; let's just push it all the way. Everyone can get unioned, and no-one's unions are worth more or less than anyone else's. If you want a religious ceremony as well, or instead of, then fine, it's up to you. Mind you, I also don't have any particular problem with unions that involve more than two people (although I could see some hilariously messy and convoluted divorce proceedings from that).
Mind you, my wife disagrees. That's not a one-liner; her argument is that we already have an established notion of a permanent bond between people in a loving relationship, that bond is called "marriage", and that rather than eliminating it we should just extend it out to everyone. I can see her point.

if you want a half-decent pub with tellys, JJ Murphys has sport on
Quick: anyone know of any pubs in Wellie that'll be showing coverage of the Tour de France? Only another month and a half to go!

how does one USE 'traditional animism' to 'maintain control'
1) Political opponent makes compelling speech arguing against your course of action, causing your popularity to drop.
2) You sacrifice a pig to the tree-sprites.
3) Political opponent is caught in bed with a transvestite hooker.Et voila.
