  • Hard News: Chew before swallowing,

My wife, also a teacher, taught in the UK where school dinners evolved to counter the fact that parents weren't sending their kids to school with lunch. Initially, she saw it as a huge waste of resources but having taught in one of the rougher parts of London (the sarf east, right between Crystal Palace & Millwall football clubs) realised it was essential to get the kids eating something. As the Jamie Oliver programme shows, it was easy to let standards slip so the schools ended up feeding them unhealthy stodge as well. I would be very surprised to see school dinners or something similar happening large scale in NZ

On the tory charity charge, one of the Usual Suspects over at I See Red wrote:

I deal with the underclass everyday, I am aware it exists all right. I look at what kids raised on welfare get compared with what my middle class Doctor and Lawyer friends give their kids and the difference is striking. But yes politically I did not think about the underclass and nor does the Labour Party very much

Ignoring Tim's Liar-bore barb at the end, this is typical of the bleeding heart conservatives - we don't care about the poor, except when we can score political points off them.

  • Random Play: It’s Only Rock’n’Roll,

    On your first point there....

I once saw Gate at the Cave in Auckland. First band started at midnight, Gate we on at about 4 and by the time we left the sun was rising. Fortunately it was a Friday night...

  • Hard News: Wonderful athletes,

I don't think anyone this side of the ditch is really on the firm moral high horse when it comes to psychotically partisan sports punditry

In particular the testosterone-heavy rubbish that our rugby and (especially) our rugby league commentators indulge in. An embarrassing parade of uninformative drivel for the most part (I'm in particular looking at you, McIvor). As for the Aussies, aren't they *required* to be partisan by the broadcaster? Problem is, the bastards are just so dominant on the pitch these days that the gloating by the commentators comes across as undignified in the extreme.

The other problem is, this bullshit preoccupation with rotation & depth. NZ doesn't have the depth to rest its top players. I think Braces may have become preoccupied with building a bigger squad after NZ toured England in 2004. The team was so racked with injury that we couldn't compete, especially when Fleming (IMHO, a great captain) refused to change his tactics to make up for the weaker team he was fielding.

Oh, and to reinforce the idea that cricket has *always* been dirty and prone to manipulation by gambling, I can't recommend highly enough the first half of Flashman's Lady, by George MacDonald Fraser. Hillarious & brilliant. That comment applies to the whole Flashman series in fact!

  • Hard News: The New Boss,

what are we dinosaurs to make of NatRad's abysmal (yet again) month of excruiatingly boring January dross?????

My question exactly. There was a discussion here the other day about whether the Herald had its cleaning staff writing copy to save money over Xmas. NatRad is just playing a bunch of long BBC World docos ad nauseu. Fine for a while, but not all the time, please!

  • Hard News: Getting the pip,

Having the Stooges and the Stripes last year was a bit of an aberration

I would happily pay $100 to see the Stooges again. Everything else was gravy on top (Magic Numbers, Beats Co-op, Kings of Leon, Shihad, White Stripes). I may be a bit old and a bit "rock" but I wouldn't be wasting my time this year. Apologies for negativity, but things just aren't like they were when I were a lad (grumble grumble)

  • Flying Nun Moments,

Agreed about the the winner. Manakura, I did a bit of time at Tomoana in the early 90s so kudos to you for your revenge....

My uncle worked there too and my cousin went out with Don the drummer for a while, so I will tell her that story over coffee this afternoon.

  • Hard News: Walk the Line,

Thanks. I love her idea that scientists are 'too lazy' to cure cancer - because cashing all those cheques for your billion dollar patent and having to get out of bed early to make it to Stockholm for your Nobel would be SUCH a total drag.

hah. I'm almost tempted to end my self imposed Kiwiblog exile!

They certainly show a bit more imagination than Dick Fuckxx and the Goatfucking Nunrapers.

Maybe that's just a New Plymouth thing?
