  • Southerly: Nine Months of Baby Hell,

Shep, you dont think that might be one of those annually recurring "special date related" stories do you?

If I hadn't heard it on the news last night, I would have thought that National's $50 crime levy was related to today's date.

Mr Matthews, or how about the 1000s of New Zealanders dead through war and disease since the inception of the NZ state? Why just 60 years? That reeks of blanket anti communist party dismissal. We can't tell the dead of anywhere anything. unless you're of the religious persuasion, in which case, you tell them. I don't mean to cast aspersions, but really, what's your point?

That killing large numbers of people for the 'greater good of the masses' is crap, no matter where it happens, and under what regime.

    That's not anti-communism, that's having some humanity.

Also crap, the expectation that you need to line up your credentials of attacking every other country in the world that has done wrong, before pointing out one in particular. Crap is crap no matter how many other bits of crap you've pointed at in the past week.

Handy hint: Print out this post and keep a copy in your wallet and bedside drawer, then you'll always have a handy contraceptive when you need it!

I always thought that this was the best advertisement for birth control :)

  • Southerly: Nine Months of Baby Hell,

My experience (and I'm onto my second kid, love them, just can never eat a whole one in one sitting) is that parents fall into two categories.

    1. OMG things are so good, sleeping all night, getting his/her drivers license at 2, knows geometry at 3, sitting for their masters degree at 6, etc etc etc.
    2. OMG it's so stressful. I'm so busy! He/she never sleeps he feeds all the time, I never get to clean or sleep or get time for myself or see people. Every nappy is a poo and he vomits every 5 seconds and he's behind in learning to crawl/walk/talk etc etc.

In my experience, the second people are the same ones who have two hour conversations in life about how busy they are and how stressful that is, rather than... doing whatever is it they need to do.

There may be a third category of people who fall reasonably in between the two, but I suspect it's very small.

Sure if it was just a power outage affecting the cabinet that'd make sense. But I'd have to wonder how much use a cabinet would be if the power was out in a region, which is probably more likely. Even if you're using a laptop with a battery, your router or modem or whatever is most likely running of mains power. I can't access the internet when I lose power.

I know what you're saying Mr Crawford, human life is human life, but for a government, of any nation, big or small, the greater good of the masses is the priority, You'd like to feel you're more than part of a statistic.

An argument that is no doubt reassuring to the millions of Chinese who have been killed by their state in the past sixty years.

Wait, that was just a statistic. I've confounded myself.

If he thinks he will still win and the evidence is that the close contest has made the Democrat party stronger then why not?

The counter-argument will be, the democrats will rip themselves to shreds at the convention, and the weeks leading up to it, the republicans already started running for the general a few weeks ago, not in September.

Columnists tend to benefit from coming back to that frightfully clever extended analogy after twenty-four hours. As often as not, it doesn't look quite so smart.

I'd struggle to see how it looked clever two seconds after it was typed. What a dick.

  • Hard News: Slumpy Cashflow,

Ah. Now you may be talking Kyle. Got a foolproof recipe? It has to be foolproof, I've brewed wine before & all but alcohol poisoned all my friends on one occasion at least.

No, my foolproof recipe involved asking my friend how he did it. The first time I tried it, we grated the apples (whole) and poured boiling water over them, left for a week, then got out the liquid. That was bad.

Second time (I asked the friend) I juiced the apples, added a small amount of yeast and sugar, left in a homebrew barrel, and then bottled. The ones I put in plastic were... well bad. The ones I put in glass bottles were drinkable, but not nice. Harsh, bitter taste.

But alcoholic, so at least I got one thing right.

As I recall the bad news is you need two trees to get apples.

I only have ginger beer experience - my only guess would be to favour a 'quick' brew; that is, drink pretty much immediately. My thought being any imperfections in your sterility shouldn't have enough time to take hold. I'm guessing that's what made me really really ill that time. So on second thoughts, don't listen to me.

This plan would also make for something of a drunken autumn.

No, surely apples don't require cross-... whatever the term is. I thought they were... do it yourself breeders (see, I'm very scientific with the language).

I do ginger beer as well - alison groftons ginger beer plant recipe that we found online. Good stuff.
