  • Hard News: Dirty Politics, in reply to Tom Semmens,

But Mora's on-going refusal to do so with his panel guests - in an election campaign no less - is disgraceful, and the sort of nod nod wink wink enabling of sneaky right wing political agendas that ends up with the complicit cooperation with Slater that has got the Herald's journalists into trouble.

It's rare for RNZ to be accused of being right-wing... However, doesn't Scott Yorke regularly appear on this show too? He's open about his political persuasions.

Hah!... I was just reminiscing with someone about those heady days. Fun times :)

There's always the movie too. A near unique election experience. Poor Mark Thomas, the first ever MMP victim. Pity. Though he wasn't the candidate I wanted to win, he was/is a thoroughly decent bloke who'd have been a good addition to Parliament.

    Whaledump Update:
    Today’s target is Katherine Rich
[edit] seems to be more about Carrick Graham than Katherine Rich, who seems tangential to the emails, though implicated.

Reading the Stuff item on this, Graham and Simich and Brewer sound like the kind of dickheads who never quite managed to leave student politics behind... sadly, there appears to be a market for undergraduate petty conspiracy.

Entirely agreed. I can calibrate the views expressed here without people declaring their voting record.

Deciding to be the one defiant exception to that rule is explicitly political and racist.

    A point fairly made Moz.

Can we call that "Understatement of the Year"?

I'm careful what I say on this matter, particularly careful to not draw comparisons with NZ (I'm not deluded into thinking NZ race relations are rosy btw). What's frankly unfathomable to me is that Australia seems to oscillate between a few significant of high points, Mabo, Keating's Redfern speech and Rudd's apology, and extended periods of indifference or punitive interventions. I don't understand this electorate at all.

Respect Craig but you are a champion for these people and reading Collins’ remarks makes me believe you are not on that “Team”

FWIW, I appreciate, Craig, that you are no different from most others who, from time to time, find the actions of their 'party' frankly ridiculous.

And, what's the deal with asking him to divulge his personal voting record? Isn't he otherwise accountable here for what he says here (or do we all have to declare our allegiences before we offer views)?

I suspect being white and male also helped you. Even in Marrickville and Newtown my partner cops frequent abuse for being female or asian.

    Undoubtedly yes.

I'm surprised, and saddened, to hear your partner cops flak in Marrickville and Newtown of any variety. Both suburbs are diverse, despite gentrification, and tolerant. Newtown particularly so... I've not seen/heard a lot of racist or sexist stuff in Newtown that's not gone strongly challenged by the locals.

The contest to be the most odious arsehole in Australia is vigorous and has many participants.

    Yup. Sad that.

Even amongst our group of friends. I couldn’t believe the total disrespect for Aboriginals. I couldn’t live with it in the end.

Sophie, agreed. Race relations in Australia is distressing.

There’s John Ansell, who despite being associated forever with Brash’s 2005 debacle is almost inevitably tagged as an “advertising guru”.

Still? I can't track it closely but hasn't he disappeared into a puff of conspiracy of late... didn't the Rotary, even, decide he was best avoided?

And it goes right through to the little things, like they still sell Coon cheese “proudly Australian”.

Coon is the name of the founder, it's not a racist term, at least in so far as it relates to the cheese

  • Hard News: Why we thought what we thought, in reply to Russell Brown,

Not at all Paul. I made it public on Facebook so fair game for anyone in a sense, although disappointed the PM appeared to bring it up in his press conference – just a little higher profile than I expected! – which is why I did a brief press statement on it.

    Best wishes with it, Matthew.

    Likewise.

I'm a more than a little Catholic on these matters; he who is without sin etc.

I don’t think Labour does enough lefty stuff to be considered a centre-left party. I guess my impressions are still tainted by Rogernomics.

I don't know where you fit a capital gains tax, for instance, into that perspective?

Steve, agreed. I've seen a lot, although as you say, it's huge so there's plenty of gaps (not north of Perth or to Uluru, yet).
