Up Front: Card on the Table, in reply to
Is your argument railing against an entrenched policy of only hiring 'like' types, or is it in favour of tokenist hiring of 'unlike' types? I'm not sure that you are making it clear.
(But that may be because I know fuck-all about the hiring policies at DC or any other comics company.)The only sci-fi I've really read over the last 10 years or so would be Iain M Banks & he's plenty right-on for me.

Yeah, but that's waffly shite really. (Not your post, but the fact that it is so imprecise and not reliable as a guide.) If your host is pouring drinks for you, how do you monitor the alcohol content accurately?
How much did I eat & how long ago and how much effect is that going to have?Relying on people to 'err on the side of caution' isn't going to work for a fair %age of the population.
-
People not being able to accurately measure their blood (or breath) alcohol levels makes it difficult for them to make an informed decision around driving capability and/or legality.
There is a degree of variability in the succeptibility of individuals to alcohol and it seems naive to rely on the general (drinking) public to err on the side of caution and 'hope' that they are safe to drive. The guidelines that get trotted out seem to vary quite a bit which again doesn't help people to make informed decisions. -

You seem to have got my posts mixed up with someone else's there, Matthew.
I have not got hung up on who crashes more - check my posts & see if I have used the word 'crash' at all...
There was never a licence giveaway on cornflakes packets.
You seem to want to read things into people's posts that simply aren't there. You just infer them and then argue against your own inferences. I'm sick of your bigotted position on this and feel disinclined to discuss it further with you.

Now we're "all mortally offended"? Jeez, you don't half like the deep end! You should try not to be so touchy.

there are literally millions of drivers in this country whose sum level of driver behaviour testing was that they managed to behave themselves for 15 minutes while a retired traffic cop was in the passenger seat.
"literally millions"?
"driver behaviour testing"??
"retired traffic cop"???I got my licence in 1970 and it was very easy in those days, but the traffic cop was not retired when he took me for the test (although I will concede that he would be by now).
Basically, Matthew, your argument boils down to "driving licence testing standards have improved over time" which is kinda self-evident and no-one is trying to contradict you on that. However, some of your hyper-bollocks statements betray your argument.
Happy cycling!

People only a very few years older than me (I'm early 30s) could get a licence by driving to the end of the road, doing a three-point turn, and then safely depositing the testing officer back at the office. Not too much before those onerous requirements came into force people pretty much could get their licence from a cornflakes packet, and those people will be driving for at least another 20 years before they start to get to the point of having to be reassessed in order to keep hold of their licence. In the interim they frequently have no fucking idea what the road rules are, and they've got the generations of bad habits that they learned from the friends and family from whom they learned to drive;
Oh, the arrogance of youth!
Cornflakes packet, eh? Bet you can't find a link to support that gem.
I'm happy to admit there's plenty of crap old drivers, but there's also all that youthful risk-taking, lack of experience and sheer ignorance to balance some of it out.
Try to accept that there are some older drivers who are good drivers and go easy on the rush for people to 'shuffle off'. -

Ranting per se is fine, but tarring 99% of motorists with a broad brush is just crap, especially when you consider that the majority of cyclists posting here are also motorists/drivers on some occasions.
I readily admit that many drivers are poor at adhering to the road rules, but perhaps a bit of enforcement of the rules rather than just revenue-gathering by the police might help to improve standards?

@Moz, I am afraid you are in danger of outing yourself as a self-righteous cyclist with this tirade:
the overwhelming majority of motorists struggle with the basic skills of staying within lanes and speed limits. Add indicating turns and stopping for orange lights and you can call 99% of motorists habitual scofflaws without fear of being wrong…
Some are willing to kill to make the point that people who don't obey the rules don't deserve to be protected by them...
Next time you're round a bunch of whining car-owners ask them how they feel about emissions restrictions. Or tyre tread depth requirements. Or who can use pedestrian crossings and when exactly road users are required to stop for them...
Sure, you feel strongly about this, but this little rant has debased all your previous posts on this thread for me.

Yeah, somethign like that. Through approved driver education facilities, with log-books, etc.
TBH it is more of a throwaway concept & unlikely to be practicable, but having developed a lot of defensive driving skills through cycling & motorcycling I can see how they improve one's car-driving.
It makes a fine concept, if nothing more...
