That realisation took place around the time that my fear of flying became kinda crippling. Because if *everyone* is faking it, then the fucking pilot is faking it and therefore WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE. (I'm not saying this is logical. It's just how my mind works.)

Oh god. I can't handle the intermittent bathing thing AT ALL. Skipping a day is the *worst*. I know a lot of people do it but... I find it gross.
(I have just realised that this post makes me sound like the most neurotic person on earth. Oh well.)

What percentage of car drivers is actually enraged by cyclists, though? I haven’t ridden a bicycle for about twenty years, but it has pretty much NEVER occurred to me to be enraged by a cyclist. Sum total of my thoughts about cyclists on the road is “oh, there’s a cyclist. Am I giving them enough room here?”, often followed by me trundling past them checking my mirrors nana-driver style. Now, there is obviously a subset of drivers that gets all crazypants about cyclists, but how large a subset is it? I am honestly curious.

I think possibly what’s happening is that your underlying “don’t worry, the oldies are going to die and that will be awesome for cyclists!” implication is a little… eugenicist for our tastes. ;)

That sounds like it might be an interlibrary loan fee. If so, the cost is basically for postage and the use restrictions on rare or older items come from the lending library. Auckland City Libraries has no leeway to loosen them. </former interlibrary loan worker>

I'm going to the Auckland show on Saturday and I have basically ZERO expectations. I'm just going because, you know, it's Ringo. Religious pilgrimage type thing. Maybe it will be better than I think!

We got a breakfast burrito at Mexicali Fresh on the Auckland waterfront, where an African-American man behind the counter was singing "Redemption Songs" to himself. (I characterised that scene as "a lot of shit going on there".) Then we went on a family walk to the Silo Park playground, where the two-year-old refused to come out of a giant metal seashell and eventually had to be bodily removed from it. (Apparently Russell saw me and my attached front-pack-baby at some point during his cycle ride and waved, but I was oblivious. This is typical of me.) We had an afternoon swim in a tsunami-free zone - the pool in the backyard - and a curry for dinner. Oh, and I transcribed a couple of 1885 Maori Land Court Minute Book pages for work, appropriately enough.

I can't say I was a fan of much about his work - presiding over the introduction of talk radio and tabloid TV news is great stuff, suddenly? - but I would like to give props to his 70s afro. That was a thing of beauty.
