Tom: you seem to be conflating property ownership and sovereignty, dominium and imperium. But the latter was not on the table, and talk of sovereignty is irrelevant to this conversation.
What was on the table was the return of the Ureweras. They would be managed by Tuhoe with full public access. While a novel solution, it would have been just, and workable, and had the support of park users. What's not to like?

Trial date has to wait until August next year because that's the first time that a court room of sufficient size for 18 defendants is available for 12 weeks.
Can't they just build another one?
Seriously; its not just this case which is being delayed, and when cases are delayed this much, justice is denied.

There were Social Credit and Bob Jones' New Zealand Party, both cited as good examples of injustice under FPP, but neither ever achieved polling parity with the big two.
The Alliance was generally ahead of Labour in 1994 - 95, before plummeting to 10% in the 1996 election.

I don't understand; what if a judge was in fact drunk or incompetent, or dishonest? What does one do then?
Not talk about it - the same as you didn't talk about a drunk, incompetent or dishonest monarch back when they used to have sedition and lese majeste.
We're just supposed to accept their "authority", their natural right to not be questioned too closely about their behaviour. Screw that.
-
This form of contempt is, of course, controversial in itself
No shit - its sedition for judges. But in a democracy, nothing should be above question. And if the reputation of the judiciary for fair decision making can't stand on its own merits, then I fail o see how threatening to chuck people in jail for questioning it does us (as opposed to judges who make poor decisions) any good whatsoever.

"Carrick Graham is now following you on Twitter!"
lol.
And me.
I'm a total follower-whore, but sorry, I don't want the eyeballs of scumbag tobacco company mouthpieces. This is what the "block" buttom was invented for.

But I can't say there's a really, really compelling social or moral argument why bars should stay open after 4am.
Sure there is: that its just not the government's business when we should party. What next? A government-mandated bedtime?
No, I don't think that alcohol isn't a problem - just that we should deal with it in a way which is properly respectful of individual liberty. Hiking the price to make people pay for the social harm they cause? Fine. Advertising restrictions? Fine. Lowering blood-alcohol limits? Fine. Telling people they can't stay up late? Not fine.
But I guess paedophobic wowserism is easier.

Locke's Bill ignored that discussion.
That's because it tried to do the minimum change, the twink republic, where the monarchy is removed and everything else continues on as before. The Treaty is its own issue, and we can work that out another day. Trying to do everything - republic, Treaty, entrenched BORA - all at once in one package is setting ourselves up to fail.

A bill setting up a Citizens Assembly to look into it is one.
Now thats a good idea...
