  • Hard News: They faked those moon…,

I seriously think some people are wired to believe conspiracy theories. I can't explain it any other way.

Yowsuh. Few things can match the initial rush of discovery that Everything You Know Is Wrong. Never again will you be made to feel inferior by a bunch of pointy-headed professors who can't even park their bicycles straight.

  • Stories: Life in Books,

a spooky classic that's quite appropriate for adults- is Neil Gaiman's Coraline

Thanks, haven't read that one, but as I've really enjoyed all of Gaiman that I've read so far I'll give it a go.

Most convincing portrayal of an artist's life for me is Patrick White's The Vivisector. Nothing else I've read comes close. A marvelous depiction of the creative process, and of how it's possible to know what you may never have directly experienced.

  • Hard News: A depressing day in court,

Does a 39 week fetus have a right to life or is it up to the mother to decide whether she wants the baby born alive or would rather have a late term abortion?

You'd need a reliable pre-natal test to determine whether the foetus in question would grow up to be grateful for the occasional corrective thumping. Once you're able to isolate ideologically driven tendencies you can terminate all you want & your problem's solved.

  • Hard News: A depressing day in court,

    Deborah:

    THEATRE!

You might be on to something there.
Diverting resources from, say, the family court into Creative NZ grants for some of the more flamboyant interested parties in the whole sorry thrashing saga mightn't be a bad thing.

  • Stories: Life in Books,

I know from his interviews he wasn't that keen on being alive anyway, but I'm sad to see him go just the same.

Seems like he went when he was ready to go. We should all be so fortunate. Great post Dyan, thank you.

the best first line ever, in The Crow Road.
"It was the day my grandmother exploded."

    That is nice 'n succinct.
Somewhat wordier, the opening line of Anthony Burgess's Earthly Powers:

"It was the afternoon of my eighty-first birthday, and I was in bed with my catamite when Ali announced that the archbishop had come to see me."

  • Stories: Life in Books,

Have you read Venus on the Halfshell by Kilgore Trout himself (not sure who really wrote it, but it wasn't Vonnegut)?

Yes Sir! Later editions were credited to Philip José Farmer.
Remember the quadruple amputee who achieved more with his remaining appendage than most manage with a full set of limbs? And Ralph Von Wau-Wau, the playboy detective who was really a German shepherd . . .

  • Hard News: The Solipsistic Left,

many horrendous scholastic, artistic, culinary and sartorial delusions can be attributed to deconstructionism - although its proponents are rarely as fun loving and levitous as post-colonial disaster writers.

What's more, these proponents of deconstruction(ism?)really hate being deconstructed. Try it on the next one you meet.

    OOps Sorry, will rephrase:
Wasn't aware of the TVNZ show, or of the ensuing complaint.
    cheers.

And yes, the Silk Air thing is awfully similar, but that shouldn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about. No sir.

Indeed no Sir, not my intention.
Just that I have an ongoing interest in the bizarre SilkAir crash. Wasn't aware that of the complaint to TVNZ shoe, or the ensuing complaint.
    Appreciate the link.

  • Hard News: Things we needed to hear,

To be fair to DPF, I get the impression that he's had little-to-no time for comment moderation.
