Hard News: Science: it's complicated, in reply to
I don't know, Lilith. Some areas are always going to be more suited to food production than others. Here on our windy hilltop in Brooklyn, for example, it's difficult to get anything much edible to grow. [For some reason, cape gooseberries do wonderfully well, but the rest of my family don't even like them much.]
I do understand the food miles arguments - but conversely, I think that on the whole, trade has been a civilising influence on the world. -

Temp has flat lined
James, that is just a blatant lie.
I'm not going to waste any time convincing you otherwise, but if anyone's interested, just look here.
The rest of your post is just as disingenuous and dishonest as well, as Russell noted. -
manuka smoked eggs
Are those smoked raw eggs, which you then cook?
I've tried various things other than fish in my home smoker (mussels, cheese, mushrooms, chillies, garlic) .. but not eggs. What a concept.
I'm sorry to hear about your back. Take it easy. -

This take on the Norway events comes at it from a male-threatened-by-female approach, which is an interesting perspective.
The DomPost had a profile on Breivik's background yesterday, and something jumped out at me
Breivik's grudge against society appears to have its roots in the humiliation he felt at being forced to learn to knit at Smestad primary school in Oslo. He says it was introduced to feminise European boys in their insane quest to attempt to create the Marxist utopia consisting of 'true equality between the sexes'. I remember I dreaded these courses as it felt very unnatural and was a complete waste of time.".. that doesn't seem all that far removed from John Ansell's hateful and bizarre rants published in the Dompost and elsewhere where he decries the 'feminisation' of our menfolk.

Having made that snide comment about TVNZ above, I've just realised that they do in fact produce some rather good series such as 'Ever Wondered' on TVNZ 7. Credit where due, etc.

You're right, Sophie, Radio NZ National deserve a huge pat on the back for their commitment to science coverage.
As for TVNZ - gah. -
The Listener got rid of a whole slew of 'em. Including the lovely Dave Hansford, who wrote this interesting piece in Saturday's Dompost.

Is geology-porn a genre?
Sure. What would you like, dike propagation or isopleth elongation?
Here, in the meantime, a hardness index -
