Hard News: Limping Onwards, in reply to
Sorry Craig, are you saying that applying the scheme to South Canterbury -- given the information available to Key and English at the time -- was a competent decision?
Cullen always knew the scheme would by fraught with problems which is why he was reluctant to introduce it but did because it was a least worst option.
Labour voted for this at every opportunity. It's a bit rich for Cunliffe to be scare mongering on this now.

The comatose nature of the economy doesn’t suggest a high degree of stewardship either.
the reasons for the sorry state of our economy go back a long way and neither Labour or National govts have been able to do enough to prevent NZ being highly exposed to the financial crisis.
I think the last tax cuts buggered the revenue base
National shifted tax more towards consumption and also started moving against tax incentives for property investment. Those were moves a left of centre govt could have made good arguments for and did not alter the revenue base that much.

Is a no fly zone and the bombing of his key assets really the best way to quell his violence?
yes it is.
But don't let the opinions of others overwhelm your concern for the well being of the Nth Koreans. I'm sure no-one who is concerned with Libya would want to discourage you from the considerable effort you clearly put into that cause.
But I'm not very in touch with the pro-democracy movement in Nth Korea. Would you be able to give us some information about your activities in that area. It must be quite a challenge.

It’s hardly a straw man. I quoted the example of the argument with Syria. It’s an argument being made and I’m interested to know just what the argument means exactly.
Is it an opposition to intervention of any sort at any time or is it a demand for nothing less than every necessary intervention at the same time.

I’m not sure if those advocating intervening in Libya are arguing...
Since you asked, I consider intervention on a case by case basis and have long thought intervention in several places around the world long overdue. However I don't require holding the well-being of some to ransom just because little action is being taken on behalf of others.
So, do you think no intervention should take place until every necessary intervention takes place at the same time?
-
Quite, and so the current coalition will clearly be going after Syria now, which is busy shooting civilians this week too.
I'm not sure if those advocating not intervening in Libya are arguing against any intervention anywhere at all or that one can only intervene in all places at the same time or else do nothing.

I give up, Neil. It’s the same imploding circle you seem to always lead a discussion into.
it was a bit of a side-issue, wasn't intending to pick a fight.

I thought what I said made sense, perhaps not.
You referenced to an article about the US getting intelligence from Gaddafi. That intelligence was to do with Islamic extremist groups and is most likely of variable quality and given with various motivations.
Given that Gaddafi has been trying to portray his opposition as Islamic extremists and the US hasn’t fallen for that I’m making a not unreasonable assumption that the US opinion of Libyan intelligence has not been high.

I'd been thinking Iran might be the next in the list of lets-all-re-evaluate-things so I was surpsised at how much I agreed with Israel is blind to the Arab revolution.
With things moving so fast there does seem to be a risk Israel will get caught out.

that wasn't what we were talking about.
I addressed the points you raised and you responded. I was under the impression the points you raised were what you intended to talk about.
