  • Hard News: Local interest,

I've had a crack at the voting paper and gave up (for now) because of the lack of specific info about policy and for sitting candidates voting records. For example, who T F is Team Waitemata, and why TF don't they have a website? So I am very happy that Gen Zero are helping with the research. Thanks!

  • Hard News: The GCSB Bill: We at least…, in reply to Idiot Savant,

Here is a point re metadata I haven't seen (dusts off rusty public law knowledge): I, a person, can do anything not prohibited by law. Government generally speaking is in the opposite position; it can do nothing if not authorised to do it. Whether you can read some sort of implicit authorisation into the bill or the existing law I can't say, but seems to me it would be vulnerable to challenge on that basis. Of course, we'd have to know it was happening in order to challenge it...

  • Hard News: Tooled Up for Food,

    Attachment

My current kitchen favourites: cast iron pan, a wedding present for my parents, smallish le creuset casserole which is used every single day, a paella pan, recent gift & already well used, and the mandoline. I don't know how I ever lived without it. These are also my go-to gifts for domestic gods and goddesses weddings, birthdays etc

  • Hard News: Who else forgot to get married?,

Cheerfully unmarried, no kids here. Perhaps because I am (ahem) mature and also on speaking terms with all waves of feminism to date there is no way I'd consider changing my name. Also, none of the male cousins have passed on the family name so it's dying unless I can persuade my equally unfortunately surnamed partner that any sprogs must carry it on. I feel sorry for my maternal line too - no descendants with the (also unfortunate yet gloriously decorated) name. Three barreled names possibly? 8 syllables I think not

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

O and, get all the cheap lemons in season, wash and quarter but leave quarters joined at the bottom. Rub with salt inside, squash as many as you can into sterile jar, top up jar with lemon juice, add some peppercorns & bay leaves if feeling fancy. Seal, leave for 4+ weeks. Preserved lemons all year.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

Right now I have a 5.5 kilo turkey brining in spicy salty sugary water, plus giblets boiling away with veg & allspice for gravy. Will report back on Sunday post turkey hangover :)

  • OnPoint: What Andrew Geddis Said, But…, in reply to Rob Stowell,

You are right that the constitution is unwritten, but to overturn the principle of parliamentary sovereignty would violate the most fundamental principle of that constitution.

Put another way, a court overturning Parliament-made law for violating the constitution would itself be violating the contstitution.

(prepares for Edgeler schooling on constitutional law)

  • OnPoint: What Andrew Geddis Said, But…,

The doctrine of parliamentary sovereignty/supremacy is precisely that, a doctrine. It's not enshrined in law. The Courts could, in a suitable case, actually strike down legislation as being unconstitutional.

Please explain. This is not my understanding.

  • Hard News: Competing for Auckland,

the article in the NBR also notes that it is "ironic" that Don Brash lives in an apartment, given he opposes the Unitary Plan. That word, I do not think it means what you think it means...

Craig, I would liberate the whole article except I am very law abiding and it's not that easy :)
