  • Hard News: Safer Communities Together,

when the internet was abruptly deprived of probably the greatest moment of real-life television policing in New Zealand history this week, loud was the wailing and, um, gnarly was the gnashing.

To what do you so obliquely refer?

My work internet does not allow me to open Facebook.

    What is this all about?

  • Hard News: Do these people even talk?,

Russell, I was hoping for some views on the amazing job the police did at surviving each news cycle while this toddler was missing.

It's an Asian woman! It's a pedophile! It's a person of interest! We have no leads! She's in the drain!

    Phew.

Gary was out there saying something like "I wouldn't be surprised if she had been stolen to order".

Asians = baby snatchers. It's well known.

And was Bob Harvey all over this like shit on a baby because he knew there had been so many complaints about the manhole?

evidence is not a synonym for science

Evidence is what is needed to make something scientific. It's the sine qua non of science.

cultural arrogance when it comes to long-established and managed practises like acupuncture that were going for thousands of years before our Euro ancestors moved on from on leeches, trepanning and spells.

I always use that same argument when I say conjugal rape and slave trading should be legal but it just doesn't seem to wash with people.

    seems religious in character

Except that religion is based on no credible evidence whatsoever.

But it would be interesting to reflect on why some feel so compelled to be a priest?

Because believing in things that aren't true is dangerous to everyone. How rational do we have to be? As rational as possible, I'd say.

I often wish I could buy bottled placebo effect. Unfortunately, the placebo effect is denied to the purely rational and we have to suffer from purely rational aches and pains brought about by our purely rational lives.

    LMAO.

Big shit storms in academia on stem cells too:

Check this fucken shit out, bod.

New Scientist is following this stuff like a magazine possessed of a burning desire to report on the academic politics of stem cell therapy.

    True story.

but I see them as victims.

No caveats from caveat emptor. I'm with you, Ross. People who want to buy snake oil don't deserve much sympathy. Maybe pity. Maybe. These are probably the same type of people that hate fluoride, pasteurisation, innoculations, etc. To fall into such a trap, one has to already be the type of person that is grossly uninformed on a lot of things. I bet they believed in ghosts. If we treated these types of choices with the derision they deserve -- like we did with smoking and should do with obesity -- things would be much more inherently ka pai.

  • Up Front: Actors Don't Hunt in Packs,

I just tell them I was Raised By Actors.

So was I and I use it as an excuse for everything. What a nice piece of writing. I went on a course recently that involved a lot of public speaking and it reminded me very much of my weird old parents. I though nothing of it when I was emailed a picture the other day of my dad in a clown costume with a picture frame hanging around his neck.

By the time Mum was one of the mad murdering sisters in Arsenic and Old Lace

My mum played Alice. This is weird. Thanks again.

  • Hard News: Rodney on the Road,

It's like deja vu all over again.

I've written to some contacts at the local liberal rag to alert them to his presence. (Today's headline should show how much they like to stick it to conservative fucktards).

If it's a slow news day, they might just take pot shots at a circus act from the anitpodes.

  • Hard News: Rodney on the Road,

Thanks for that. I'll send that around to everyone I know from Toronto. They have not a Super but rather a Megacity. It is universally loathed and cost the city gazillions mainly due to the need to harmonise collectives and terms and conditions of public employees. Like Atlanta, Montreal, etc.

  • Hard News: Friday Gold: An email…,

    Awesome. Just awesome. Thanks, Russell.

I reckon it's only a matter of time until Laws has a Jimmy Swaggart / Jimmy Baker day of reckoning. Someone should go through his rubbish. I bet it's a goldmine of credibility destroying tidbits.

  • Hard News: What the TiVo deal signifies,

    Quite!

    I'm glad I'm not alone!

I get very tempted to just give up and go to the library for another book.

    Do!

Is there anywhere on-line that gives a simple breakdown of what is available now and what is coming up, and the implications? Or is it all just changing too fast?

Even if there were, it wouldn't change the fact that every time I look at the TV listings I can't find one single thing I would watch except under torture.

Television has gotten so bad that giving it up was almost an issue of self-defence.

Remember this: if Goebbels could come back to life and witness the degree to which capitalism was able to assert itself over the minds of the masses through television he wouldn't stop wanking for billion years.

  • Hard News: What the TiVo deal signifies,

It's Telecom that has to make this work, and TiVo in New Zealand has gone from being a Freeview DVR with an added facility for on-demand IPTV programming, to an IPTV receiver that's also a Freeview DVR.

    Does that actually make sense?

I think I might have stopped watching television subconsciously to avoid having to learn new dazzling acronyms and gatherings of letters.

Does anyone else find themselves lost in all this?

I'm reminded of Rip Torn's line in the Larry Sanders Show:

"My television goes up to 13 like a normal person."
