  • Up Front: Hitting That,

Being able to pass, of course, is what makes us the ninjas of the Gay Agenda. I've had bigots be all bigotty at me at the school gate because I was there picking up my kids and appeared to be in a straight relationship, and I could say, "Oh, really? Really? You can spot 'them'? Because hey guess what..."

I have to admit I enjoy the 'Oh really? Cos...' part of it a lot

  • Up Front: Hitting That, in reply to nzlemming,

Like her, it's about the person, not the peripherals.

    Exactly.
This was a great post Emma, and the article itself was pretty spot on. I've never heard other bis talk about the 'feeling like a traitor' thing, so it was kind of a breakthrough to hear it said out loud. I was lucky to work out my sexuality pretty early on in my teens, but I've spent a lot of time defending having a male spouse, so this article really spoke to me.
But I'm blown away by the statistics. I hadn't expected that some of my own experiences could be attributed to my sexuality (I'm not saying they are) ... And the lost earning potential?! Makes me think twice about whether to be open in job applications in the future... But of course that's just taking the easy way out *again*, isn't it?

I really hope that it's easier for teenagers now than it was then, that there's much greater awareness of a continuum of sexuality.

    I freaking hope so too.

  • Southerly: Village People,

It's hard hearing 'you'll get there' when 'there' is so far away, I know. Here's to getting through each short-term goal. And happy birthday.

  • Up Front: A Real Character, in reply to Emma Hart,

I thought Mandarin was being used as a lingua franca in Firefly, and so that's why no one was speaking it _without_ an accent? Just like for Global English.

  • Up Front: A Real Character, in reply to Lucy Stewart,

Absolutely. But I admit to seeing the seasons completely out of order so never saw anything progress, which weirdly made it more obvious that Things Had Happened That Had Changed Them, but not as obvious that they had ruined the premise. Agree with you all completely on the Gorgomon plot. I guess I mentioned Bones only with reference to the variety of female characters as (well, until the Baby fixation) characters who happened to be female.

  • Up Front: A Real Character, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Add to that Penelope Garcia from Criminal Minds. She gets to be talented, intelligent, quirky (although I hate to define her that way...) and she can still be sexy, flirty, and in a completely solid relationship at the same time. As in, she can still be herself even if she has a partner... In fact, she's almost the most rounded character in the whole series.

I had thought Abby in NCIS was a bit broader in terms of what we didn't see her do, but was implied. (At least, in the first few seasons when I watched it.) Maybe I'm mis-remembering it?

And as far as women-rich ensemble casts go, Bones is pretty good for that...
