Hard News: The humanity, in reply to
If we get locked into a ‘blame the media’ narrative I don’t think it leads anywhere constructive. The media is us. And even then, their influence on the electorate is over-stated.
The framing of the six o'clock news and the daily papers drives the understanding of almost everything for everyone in this country. Don't confuse the exceptions (people here) with the majority.
No, it's not helpful to get stuck in a "blame the media" narrative. However, just because that's not the only problem doesn't mean it's not a problem - the media doesn't get a free ride just because the Labour party has its own problems. Especially since Labour patently only represents a declining portion of the country.

It's not clear where the payout would end up if the 30% uplift doesn't come through, from the articles I've read.
However, bad times regardless.

Still waiting for any serious investigation into which of our “journalists” have been working for Slater co and churning out national party lines.
Why even argue about how they’re behaving when we know at least some of them are puppets?
While I understand why Nicky Hager chose not to name names for the media people involved, I believe he's done a disservice to the general public by allowing them to continue as they were, given how we rely on the media to know what is going on.

I'd love to know, but my wife and I have been planning on a thirty percent value drop. I may yet be proved overly optimistic. Ah the joys of buying a house when you're too young for the party years.

I was thinking that might be a way to manage both the voter impact of implementation, and insulation from the necessary market adjustment tied to continued investment. like you said, interesting.

Bringing in a CGT just before the bubble pops would have been … interesting.
You thinking negative payouts/tax credits? That would be interesting. If you were implying "oh it's not the right time yet" then eh, I have no patience for that sort of thinking. Change is always hard, the band-aid approach is best.

Brian Easton has an interesting column up on Pundit that theorises, among other things, that the election was early because of an expected slowdown in the economy later in the year.
I have to admit that it has occurred to me that an economic implosion in the short term might do better for the country in the long term, by forcing change on the change adverse, although only when I'm feeling particularly ungenerous.
I'm still amazed by how much we choose to ignore the housing bubble and pretend it is the new normal, and expect to go on as we are now forever. Not too different to our approach to climate change though, I guess.

the rancid carcass of Blair’s legacy.
Speaking of which, one wonders if the reinvigorated National government will be sending the SAS back into a land war in asia.
