Question option 1: Clearly NZ’s commercial media model is a failure and we need non-commercial broadcasting and media. But what would the Greens advocate and how would they ring-fence funding so that any subsequent governments can’t close these channels/websites down?
Question option 2: In the wake of Dirty Politics, Should there be an inquiry into NZ news media, blog standards and news standards, much like the Leveson Inquiry in the UK, with a view to perhaps establishing a statutory body to regulate all media standards?

Hard News: We can do better than this, in reply to
Yes and Joyce is probably working out how they can sneak the Conservatives an electorate seat after all.

The whole thing calls for an independant inquiry, not denials.

Craig, at times your tone and level of bile is reminiscent of the gutter trolls you deride.

Regarding Russell's initial request for debate reports, we held the CBB wgtn debate last night. Well attended and erudite audience who were mostly calm and polite until Craig Foss complained about the financial mess his govt inherited, etc. By the end there was quite a lot of anger at the fudgery in his answers to audience questions.

Hard News: The silence of the public square, in reply to
Be less fussy. Non-voters are like those single people who sit on the shelf, waiting for Mr or Ms Right and complain that they never arrive.
If you don't vote you lose the right to complain.

Lisa Owen had no options with Joyce short of putting him in time out. The sound mixer should've wound down his microphone.

Hard News: Over the paywall?, in reply to
How not workable? Levies exist throughout most industries without problem. Yes Netflix would be one of a small minority of websites who successfully operate paywalls, most of which sell exclusive video content. I'm referring to everything else.

What continues to bother me is that while the content creators struggle to monetise their work the distributors are rolling in it, just for connecting a few wires and superior marketing. I strongly believe govt should levy the ISPs and distribute that to content creators - stuff and nzherald included.

By chasing another 500,000 listeners (content consumers?) Radio NZ may be entering its own little ratings race. Meeting that target they might be tempted to shorten all reports, keep it snappy, run competitions and stick to more positive themes. Hard to believe but look at the rest of NZ media.
Anyone concerned about this might want to visit www.betterbroadcasting.co.nz (shameless plug sorry Russell)
TVNZ problems started when it went into competition with TV3 and the marketing department now makes all programme decisions. Radio NZ are not at that point yet.
