Who’s selling the book?
Unity Books, in Wellington (of course).

Know what's dangerous? Skydiving. Mountain climbing. Flying light aircraft. Adventure tourism. Walking down stairs. Wet floors. Ice. Not cigarettes, which are less dangerous than things still promoted locally as health tonics, like red wine.
That is such bullshit. How many people die per year from skydiving, mountain climbing, flying light aircraft, adventure tourism, walking down stairs, wet floors and ice combined? A total of, say, 50? It has to be at least a factor of 100 less than the 5000 or so who die per year as a direct result of smoking.
What part of "smoking remains the single biggest cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in New Zealand. It is estimated that half of all long-term smokers die of a smoking related illness" do you disagree with, semantics aside? -

Sorry but Hager is looking like a twat using ill-informed snippets to come up with wild assertions e.g. command relationships.
How about you read the book before you make judgments like that, John?

But Ben, surely shops that have good service will be rewarded by having loyal customers and doing well? Isn't that just good business practice?

There's nothing wrong with thanking someone by whatever means for a job exceptionally well done - like Islander describes. But the whole culture of tipping puts pressure on every single transaction and it seems to me that there is something very wrong with people expecting to be tipped at every turn just for doing their jobs (leaving aside the issue of non-living wages for a moment). And I agree with Danielle - I don't think NZ service is all that terrible either. I am thoroughly glad to live in a country where tipping isn't part of the culture.

I'm with you on this one, Islander. It just feels deeply wrong and un-egalitarian.

It's not exactly what you're talking about, but I had a colleague who would think nothing of expressing breast milk in the middle of a meeting. I'm happy to have worked in a team where everyone just took it in their stride.

Were we able to freely access academic journal articles, we might be able to examine such evidence.
Nice threadmerge, George!

Rich, reviewers are chosen by the journal - although I have come across situations where authors are asked to nominate a range of potential reviewers, presumably to save the editor the effort of doing so.
They don't get paid; it's considered an academic duty. Generally they remain anonymous.
It's a deeply flawed system in many ways, but seems to be preferable to any alternatives yet devised.
