The above are John Hattie's views. In light of his status as an advisor to John Key, they are very interesting.
Why the rush?

and they're not going to change their brand of toilet cleaner or refrigerator either, so don't bother advertising to them
Hmmm. While I still haven't quite grasped the fact that TVNZ is probably never going to meet my viewing needs again, as a representative of the 54+ demographic, I dispute the above generalisation.
Us boomers are not stay at home couch potatoes resistant to change and without desires!!!!

I believe older people are also more likely to carry on propping up existing media business models - like advertising-funded television and album music - far longer than their children and grandchildren will
I agree - I'm 63 and still like to turn on the telly and watch what's on offer (ONE) hoping there'll be something good and nearly always disappointed! I use TVondemand but old habits are hard to break and I would rather curl up on the sofa and watch the TV than sit at my computer. I go to bed early so late shows are out. I've forgotten how to connect and and programme our DVD recorder and have been too lazy to set it up since we moved.
I could plug the laptop into the TV I guess but I haven't quite caught up with that technology.
Therefore, to cut a long story short, people of my vintage should be in the ratings demographics ... especially for One.

You've just pretty much managed in that sentence to confirm what most here (me included) have been complaining about - and the entire point of the blog.
Agree with this but I would maintain that Close Up is as "bad" - in fact I'd rather examine another woman's boobies than see two segments of Close Up deal with an attack on DOC and a scheme to eat kiwi. Focussing on a madman.

they just liked their feathers - and their smell - as one who has smelt one in the wild, they really do smell like honey - with a subtle earthy overtone.
That's beautiful. And they're fluffy and cute too.

What would this guy say?
-
It was the WAY the programme was presented rather than whether we should eat wekas or not (Chatham Islands?) - it was so terrible that I'm not even going to try for a more analytical and rational argument. It's almost as if they wanted another Transpower eccentric or serial dog killer fanatic to up their ratings.
-
Sorry to harp on but Close Up is still polling the punters - results just out 85% say yes - we should farm our endangered species. In light of the TERRIBLE content of the show, that is horrifying.
-
Help! Idly watching One - Close Up seems to have devoted two segments to a raving nutter who thinks Doc is communist and wants to farm weka, kiwi and other endangered species for food ... Sainsbury et al dragged two reluctant Doc bigwigs into interviews and took it seriously. He mentioned China: panda burgers? Oh dear. It wasn't a skit was it?
-
In any event, it's a lot better than another fumbling Sainsbury interview and those dreadful, gushing Dominic Bowden celebrity pieces on Close Up.
I like this - Sainsbury is disappointing. I think Bowden's talents are being thoroughly misused. But whenever I switch over to Campbell Live I find a trivial story there. I guess I could plan my viewing and look at the website but old habits of just turning on the telly are hard to break.
