Up Front: That's Inappropriate!, in reply to
Isn't Mantrol the radio-control unit you get when you buy a man? That's what it sounds like! ;-)

My problem is more, yes, the attitude in the follow-up pieces, that being a ‘slut’ is something so terrible that it’s worth making a teenager miserable to keep her off that terrible destructive path.
What I hate about anybody being called a slut is that it's fundamentally sexist: it's not OK for a woman to be sexually available, whereas for a male it's often a matter for pride.

Wow, speaking of adults, apparently we shouldn't be showing our arms, as that would be unprofessional:
“Covering arms is a mark of respect in many religions institutions and sacred spaces, so too it should be in the workplace.”

Hard News: Do you like what we've done…, in reply to
Except for Ian D., in which case computer would usually crash, I presume.
Computers crash, humans collapse with laughter. All systems destabilised. ;-)

Even better: clicking the "validate" button checks the internal logic of a comment! ;-)

I’m with Robyn and Danielle on the liking! Damn FB has colonised our brains.
And also, I like the new look, a lot. Shiny, Cap’n! :-)

I've come to the discussion rather late, but I've thought a bit about the Pascalle/Judd story arc. Wayne rescues Pascalle from a future with Nicky G just like he rescued Cheryl from a future with Wolf: the naive, idealistic Pascalle is like a younger and less emotionally-scarred Cheryl. I can see why she would appeal to Judd.
And Judd, who's been the embodiment of moral rectitude, finally does something unforgivable. Accustomed as we are to all manner of dodgy hookups among the West clan (can you even COUNT the characters who've bedded 2 or more of the West family?!), Wayne's liason with Pascalle is shocking because it's him. And also because the whole series has seemed like the story of the Cheryl-and-Wayne romance, and we don't like the hero, uh, changing horses, right at the end of the race. We don't get the neat-and-tidy romantic fadeout we were expecting; we don't get The Wests Version 2, with Wayne and Cheryl playing happy families and everyone being law-abiding. Perhaps if we had got that ending it would have seemed forced, and false?

People who had more than three children would have them because they wanted to. if anything this would enhance their value relative to the other children. All three children could get the same funding and then it stops from there. You could do it that way instead of more gradually.
Sally, I know you write in haste, but how does this idea not impoverish all children of larger families? It's not their fault which family they're born into. And how many children are the result of planned pregnancies, anyhow? I think we start to get into murky territory if you're suggesting either aborting or leaving children without adequate support. Is that what you're suggesting?
I'd also note that the vast majority of people receiving the unemployment benefit are on it for a short time...so I think your 'unemployed parents having lots of children while on the benefit' would only ever be a small number of families.

Arohanui Jackie, and everyone. It's so refreshing to hear beneficiaries praised for doing well in spite of our difficult circumstances. Everyone I know who is on a benefit would rather not be, and is doing their absolute best in the face of hardship, disability, stunningly bad luck, or all of these.
I am reminded of hearing Celia Lashlie talk about prisoners, and how if we actually met them and heard their (usually horrific) personal background we might feel differently about them. It's so easy to hate people we don't know.

it's bloody loud underneath the PA system
