  • Random Play: The Cure -- for what ails you,

Heh. I got about halfway down and thought 'gosh, this is sounding awfully like that Bob Dylan review from a few days ago... ohhhhh.'

    a) I thought Bob was really good, actually. His drummer kicks all kinds of ass. Besides, the voice of Bob Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour is immensely comforting to me. Even when he's singing his own songs!
    b) I wish that either The Cure or my dog registrations had been cheaper. As it was, I couldn't have both. Meh.
    c) I will, however, be saving my pennies for Justin Timberlake. Will I be the oldest person in the crowd? Only time will tell.

  • Hard News: Evil,

I'm rather gobsmacked that there are still 'errors in judgement' people around. Yes, when I was 24 I was completely power-mad and ethically bankrupt too. Because 24... that's not *adulthood* or anything, is it?

I'm with Span. This is... really dodgy.

  • Hard News: Idiotic and lamentable behaviour,

I find the whole 'Auckland vs the rest of the country' thing in NZ kind of pointless myself, from both angles. I think it's dumb when Aucklanders characterise other New Zealanders as hicks; I think it's dumb when the rest of New Zealand acts like Auckland sucks. It's stupid. We're so small, and so alone, down here in the middle of nowhere! Can't we all just, erm, get along?

(Besides, I can't think of one place in New Zealand I don't like. I love it all. I am, clearly, a stupid hippy.)

  • Radiation: Back to the 80s,

I love 30 Rock too, and I'm somewhere in the middle on Studio 60: the 'comedy' sucks *so much* that it hurts (and has to be put in quotation marks), and it's really rather pompous and self-important and unbelievable and poorly lit and every episode has a clunky line of dialogue that makes me bury my head in my hands and... well, the list of faults goes on. But its redeeming quality is that it's so stupendously All About Aaron Sorkin's Issues that I can't. look. away! Red states vs blue states: check. Flyover states vs coasts: check. 'Quality' television vs 'reality' television: check. Brave Risk-Taking Thoughtful Entertainers against Big Bad Corporate and Governmental Interests: check. Aaron Sorkin's Christian girlfriend who he broke up with because she went on The 700 Club: check. Apparently it gets even crazier as the season goes on!

And yeah, Matthew Perry is good in it. I do like him.

  • Hard News: New Rules,

Sorry to drag this all the way back up to the top, but my friend in America (no, really, an actual friend in America!) informs me that our lovely new rules about satirising and denigrating Parliament actually make The Daily Show tonight.

  • Radiation: Ghosts of television past,

I'm guessing that with The Singing Bee contestants are given random song titles, some of which THEY MIGHT NOT KNOW, and are forced to sing them -- with often hilarious results!!!!!!!!

Aha! I actually saw a clip of this on The Soup (my favourite E! show by miles) on Sunday. People had to sing, erm, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. It was just as terrifyingly cheesy as you might imagine. My husband said 'if Kurt could have killed himself more than once, he would have done it about thirty times based on this'.

(No, no one got the words right. Especially not 'a mosquito, my libido' or 'a denial, a denial, a denial...')

  • Radiation: Ghosts of television past,

In the '90s I had a conversation on whether this ruined "Reservoir Dogs" for New Zealanders or made "A Dog's Show" cool.

Heh. I had the proverbial blown mind when I saw whatever Tarantino film it was and recognised that tune, because I only knew it as an instrumental theme song. I don't think the movie was ruined for me, but it did make A Dog's Show seem somehow more mysterious and menacing! So I think I would come down on the side of the latter...

I had a girlfriend once who used to get horny listening to the commentators on Pot Black. Those dulcet whispered tones did something to her...

That is thoroughly wonderful. I'm still confused by the 'dulcet tones commentary rule', though: it applies to dog trials, snooker, and golf, but not to someone kicking a penalty in soccer or rugby, or shooting free throws in basketball. Why?

  • Radiation: Ghosts of television past,

Another vote in the pro camp on A Dog's Show. But only the eye-dog segments. The barky ones never gave you the combination of deeply comforting, quietly-spoken commentators (why *did* they talk so quietly anyway? It's not like they were actually herding the sheep themselves) and nail-biting tension: in this epic mental battle between the ovine and the canine, who will come out on top? Is there a bolshy sheep in the mix? Because if there is, all bets are off! The dog might think it's got them penned, with the farmer stretching out his walking stick as far as it will go, trying to nudge them inside... and then drama! One little bastard will make a dashing break around the fence, while you can see the typically taciturn farmer's shoulders collapse, grimly, under the weight of failure. Awesome stuff!

Besides, that instrumental 'Flowers on the Wall' theme song rules. :)

  • Hard News: Death Spiral!,

I would like to interject briefly, and note that I have carefully read every single post in this thread. Some of them more than once. I also have several degrees and diplomas from recognised tertiary institutions, so according to certain societal measures I am not a complete imbecile. Yet I am still so thoroughly confused by global markets, 'pegging' to the US dollar, and what our interest rates actually mean that my head is swimming. How do you people *understand* all this stuff?

However, the one thing I think I have gathered is that we're all doomed. DOOOOOOMED. Awesome.

  • Radiation: CSI: Ferndale,

"the fabulous Weeds"? Hmmm - all I saw was a few munchies jokes in a suburban skin. Maybe I didn't pay enough attention.

Well, lessee. I love several things about Weeds. Here are a few:

    a) Elizabeth Perkins. She plays that 'wonderfully bitchy best friend' role perfectly.
    b) The non-saccharine relationships between our friendly neighbourhood drug-dealing mother, Mary-Louise Parker (who rules) and her two kids. They seem to have been drawn from life rather than from some idealised notion of what parent-child relationships should be.
    c) In... Sunday's?... episode, little dude referred to spying on his older brother having sex as 'an accident! An AWESOME accident!' I laughed for minutes and minutes at that.
    d) Elvis Costello sang the theme song in the last episode.
    e) There is no moralising about drugs.
    f) Kevin Nealon is in it. I like him.
    g) That other dude from The 40 Year Old Virgin is in it. I also like him.

    OK, that is all.
