  • Up Front: Mmmmmm, MMP,

And getting his daughter to front it was so laughably transparent.

I was never quite sure how that was supposed to work. I guess they thought they had issues with being a bit 'rich white man' and Shirtcliffe's associations with big business weren't going down too well. So they got her in, and she turned out to be even more arrogant and dismissive than he had been.

  • Island Life: We have ways of making you torque,

Though we could follow that up with "Ja, das Hokey Kokey".

That is exactly what goes through my head every time someone mentions Kraftwerk.

  • Hard News: Weekend Warriors,

    She's an absolute horrorshow.

But, but, that's not what Deborah Hill Cone said in the Listener! Doesn't that make you some kind of intellectual elitist?

OTOH, Tina Fey appears to have job security for the next few months. That's uncanny.

  • Up Front: Young and Sort of Free,

I'm kind of hoping the idea will be quietly swept under the carpet in Oz. They've had their trial, so the fundies will shut up for a while, and the impact on services so bad, I can't imagine the ISPs will roll over easily.

When I first read about Aussie politicians mooting the idea, that was my initial reaction, that it wouldn't fly.

I now think they're too strongly and publicly committed to it to back down even if it's as bad as it looks like it's going to be. They're certainly rolling on with it.

And I would love it if so many people opted out that the scheme became ridiculous. But given that requires a)awareness and b)effort, I'd be surprised to see it happening.

  • Hard News: Now It's On,

and $2 in the jar every time they appeal to “ordinary kiwis”

$5 anytime a member of a political party that is not National (or United Future, just to be safe) uses the phrase "mainstream New Zealanders".

$2 every time a politician claims to know what I think on an issue because I have children, and $5 if it's the exact opposite of what I actually believe.

  • Field Theory: Sports Review's Dingo Deans,

I imagine all of his Canterbury following would have bayed for his blood if the Crusaders had slipped.

To be fair, I think he could have got a good head start while we all stood round going 'wait a minute, what? I don't understand. Where's the tea?'

If anyone's in the vicinity, could you be a dear and pop down and throttle him for me?

Far out, we need to start the drinking game already? I may not make it to November.

  • Up Front: Young and Sort of Free,

What im not seeing here is anyone saying that kiddie porn is for sickos that need help or jail time!

That's probably because it's not directly relevant to any discussion of filtering. Also if everyone agrees with that proposition, it doesn't make for a very long discussion. You want to have that conversation, go right ahead. While you're about it, you might like to define pornography.

If a magazine printed this stuff there would be serious trouble, why should ISP's that make millons not be taking greater efforts to block it?

They don't make their money from pron, do they Shayne? Nor do they produce it. And running an ISP isn't like running a library or a bookshop - you don't have control over the inventory.

  • Cracker: Being there is everything.…,

Having worked in bars I don't know how many times I've heard the "don't you know who I am line" uttered to doormen. Which always seems so utterly useless, because clearly, they don't.

My partner had this said to him by a former mayor of Chch who shall remain nameless when he asked her for ID to sign her up for the video store. Here's a tipper: he just asked you for ID.

Do they have phones in Timaru yet? Fire? The wheel?

    Oi, watch it.

Though basically my entire net career is based around the idea that nobody from my home town can read or type...
