  • Speaker: What PACE actually does,

Most of my art school contemporaries are now working in fields not related to the arts, while others have moved through several different types of work to eventually return to the creative industries. Art school is generally a high-pressure environment, but it's one where you're surrounded by mentors and have all the facilities and resources to meet the demands of your study. When you graduate, suddenly all that stops, and figuring out, alone, how to earn money from your skills is a huge challenge. With the right mentoring, it's much easier. I had great help from our regional economic development agency, the Canterbury Development Corporation (CDC), which runs a lot of small-business courses which are fully government funded, and also offers advice and one-to-one mentoring if requested, most of which is given without charge.

I think art and design schools could do a lot more liaising with industry, which would help smooth the transition into paid work for their graduates. Otherwise we end up highly-skilled but struggling to fend for ourselves. And the help we need is not only specific to the creative industries, and different from employment/business in other fields, but is often highly personal and particular.

Given that the sale of power-generating companies is likely to make electricity super-expensive, can the Opposition revive the "Cold Showers!" slogan used so successfully by the Nats in 2008?

  • Muse: TV Review: Night in the Garden of Pain,

You know what Nights In the Gardens of Spain reminded me of? Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?. Kawa was much too perfect to be credible; everybody loves everything about him, except for the gayness, which they learn to tolerate. It doesn't really make for dramatic tension.

Also, Kawa seems virtually asexual. He seems to take no pleasure in anything, quite a contrast with David in the book.

I know you don't recommend the book, Craig, but I do! David's complicated and interesting, I was completely engrossed in the story. Don't be put off by the bland adaptation.

  • Muse: Linky Love, in reply to Sacha,

I just wish the yanks would get over their need to remake the rest of the world's culture so everyone speaks with their accent - provincial hicks.

    +1

Also, does the US Skins trailer look eerily like the ALAC ad with the student party where the guy goes outside and throws up on the lawn, and then you see the whole thing in reverse, including the vomiting?

  • Muse: The High Aesthetic Line, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Craig, I'm not trying to attack anyone involved with the adaptation of Nights in the Gardens of Spain. And I must confess it's many years since I read the book, and I might see it differently on re-reading. I'm just giving my honest response.

You seem to think it's OK to lambast Ihimaera, but not Kate McDermott? Personally I don't want to attack either one, just to discuss my impressions and compare them with other people's. If it's not OK to criticise, then praise becomes meaningless.

I also recognise that television, like film and theatre, is a collaborative process, and I wouldn't hold a screenwriter responsible for the success or failure of the product. And a feature-length production is never long enough to do a novel justice, as so much has to be left out. As I said above, elements that were essential to the story were lost, IMO.

  • Muse: The High Aesthetic Line,

OK so I watched the tv adaptation of Nights in the Gardens of Spain, and was really underwhelmed. It was so sentimental and plodding.

As I remember the book, David's secret life is very complicated and crowded, with his anonymous sexual partners, his romantic attachments, his ex-lovers, his acquaintances and friends.

What with all that complexity, plus his feelings of guilt, fear, and self-loathing, it's no wonder he idealises the "simplicity" of his life with his wife and children. His "galleon of fairy princesses" is his pathetic fantasy, not the mawkish reality.

The sanitised tv version loses the edginess and the emotional power the book had. And it makes David/Kawa a type, not a person in his own right. If he'd been allowed to be complex and flawed, the story could have been engaging and electric.
