You know, apart from a few rather pathetic letters to the editor, I haven't come across any major emotional headcases out there and I'm currently travelling in the deep South - a region you'd think would be amongst the most vociferous.
It seems to be the MSM who keep bleating on about it all and the meltdowns happening around us...er, where exactly?
This has really been a lesson for me about how far away from the pulse the MSM's finger actually is. Because before that fantastic homecoming in Christchurch, I thought that they were representing the prevailing feelings of the country, and it turns out that they... weren't. At all.
Is now the time to mention the 50+ pages of post-loss messages of support in the Herald's Your Views, of all places? The messages are all very measured and some are rather lovely. Practically endless 'never mind, we're still proud of you, it's only a game'. There's even one from a French person, all in French, which I believe says something quite poetic about the French rugby team being a star in the rugby sky, but the All Blacks being the sun. (Yeah, I know, but it sounds a lot less cheesy in French.) So. We don't suck nearly as much as I thought we did. I'm pretty pleased with us, actually.

__Exile in Girlrugbyville__
This whole idea is brilliant. I'm thinking up appropriately modified lyrics... 'It took an 80 minutes out of one day/once we scored a try the other team just went away'. Or for particularly heightened moments: 'we'll play you like a pitbull in a basement'.
You people who measure height in centimetres make me feel as old as the hills. I'm five foot three and a half, and I'm sticking with it.

I can confirm this. Danielle was the person who quite happily accepted detention for 'forgetting' her PE gear every single day in high school. Lesser of two evils I think was her theory.
Heh. Hey, I didn't 'forget' my PE gear every day. Sometimes I lied about having period pain, too! Depending on the teacher. I liked to change it up a little. *Man*, I hated PE. I hated PE almost as much as I hated maths. How did I end up being a sports fan? And strategic advisor to the PAS Pirates? It's a funny old world...

prescribed "go" and "no-go" pills to help them cope...
Well, if it worked for Judy Garland... oh.

Seconded! Robyn will lead us to glory against... someone!

Danielle - how about Strategy Coodinator or something?
Excellent! Although... what with my tiny, walnut-sized female brain being so occupied with nurturing and scones and hair-ribbons and whatnot, will I be able to handle the pressure? It is a concern. Never mind! I can always ask my hubby to tell me what to do - he's so *big* and *strong*, and I just *know* he would never cry in public and shame his sex...
:)

Problematic: I have the athletic ability of an amoeba, and I am squat. I don't think I should be relied upon for anything too important. Perhaps I'm the prop instead. Or, like, the person who gets the orange slices at half-time.

threats fall into the "Theatre" bucket
What threat? I am confused. Oh, 'your ass is grass'? That was more of a prediction, when I wrote it: I mean, come on - he just told Tze Ming and all the women of Public Address that they aren't allowed to talk about something. Who *wouldn't* predict carnage? :) Still, yes, unintentional theatre. Sorry.
I didn't think what he was saying was mysoginistic
Oooooookaaaayyyy. Also, I'm finding this part of the thread very, very funny in an incredulous kind of way, so I don't think I could get much 'lighter' in mood, at this point. Especially considering I was just told, seriously, by an actual person, to shut up about something because I'm a woman. Oh, and that one of my interests is gender-inappropriate. I feel like I have been magically transported to 1957, but with Teh Interweb!
(I can't believe I actually have to make this disclaimer, but of course men are able to discuss breast cancer/prostate cancer or childbirth or whatever they want. Good discussion should not be gender-exclusive one way or the other.)

most females just don't get it. Men in this country are not allowed to lecture women on childbirth or question the amount of money spent on breast cancer prevention vs the amount spent on prostate cancer prevention, so keep your views on All Blacks crying to yourself. its an issue for us guys to argue over.
Wowwwwwwwweeeeeee. You just went totally crazy in public! Awesome! Your ass is *grass*, dude. That's so offensive that it's actually almost hilarious. You're serious?
(By the way, I think that when you resort to the 'you chicks are not entitled to talk about this' card, you automatically lose the argument. It's like a Godwin thing. Call it Friedan's Law if you like.)

Perhaps now isn't the best time to complain at how... oppressive rugby can feel in this country. But that's how it is.
I'm quite interested in this subject. Do you think it's more or less oppressive than it was in, say, the 50s? Because I imagine that in the past, on one hand it was more oppressive, because we had so few recreational options, so boys were forced into rugby-playing or nothing else. Now there are so many different things kids can do instead, and our culture is maturing past 'sport and sport alone', I think, but at the same time, the proliferation of media and rugby professionalism has made the game bigger, flashier, more ubiquitous, the messages have become more extreme... and of course, I'm a woman and I ignored rugby until the 1990s, and now I like it, so I never felt the oppression at all. Is anyone here old enough to remember and compare?
(I like the line in our anthem that says 'the nation's van'. I know it stands for 'vanguard', but I enjoy imagining the type of van we would drive, as a nation. Probably a Toyota Hi-Ace...)
