  • Hard News: Deadly Exuberance,

And you really cannot miss this.

Still not as scary as Richie Benaud in HD. Nothing may ever be.

I think a video game where the participants run amok in a shopping mall stealing household implements and using them to kill rivals would be lots of fun.

Every year, I want to cross this concept with something Call of Cthulu-ish, where you battle Elder Gods in a shopping mall while trying to avoid Christmas Music San Damage. One Mistletoe and Wine equals ten Snoopy's Christmases equals a hundred Fairytale of New Yorks.

  • Up Front: Hellfire's a Promise Away,

I believe it's an accurate description of a particular state of mind no matter who it's used for.

Indeed, I don't think there's much point in trying to get proscriptive about the slangy cutting edge of language. It's not so much a matter of 'can people use this term for this gender' as 'do they' and if they do, that's pretty much it.

Also, the only 'girly' equivalent I can come up with off the top of my head is both a proper noun and an in-joke, and also not very nice. (I try to be nicer/less interesting in my old age, but occasionally I have lapses. I think I said some pretty sexist things after seeing the Viaduct Basin for the first time on Saturday night.) I guess I think of a fuckwit as being substantially nastier and more deliberate than a dickhead, who's just like that.

    But, y'know, potato, potato.

And where does one sign up for this true religion?

Here. Please note, this is just a link and in no way an endorsement of any particular lifestyle choices.

    You were just hungry then?

Erm, it was more in the nature of... ceremony? Like taking communion.

    >'See that guy? Stay away from him'. Worked like a charm.

I bet you he was good looking to begin with.

I know he reads here, so I feel very odd about replying to that. It did give him a tangeable air of Dangerous Bastard. To be fair, he also was a bit of a Dangerous Bastard.

I think it makes a kind of sense to date a few dickheads during the undergraduate years. By the time you are actually ready to settle down there's a chance that experience has taught you a few bitter lessons and the sweet, dependable, non-dangerous guys will seem more like a refreshing change.

That's the theory I've worked on. Then I tell people that I'd really like my kids to, well, sleep around a bit first before they settle down. The Horror.

Of course, a woman would have to sit on my lap for me to know that she was flirting with me

Assumptions. I've licked aerosol chocolate mousse off a guy's chest and not been flirting with him. I guess context is everything.

  • Field Theory: The Return,

It would be useful if they had actually said something like "home strip Light, away strip dark" and enforced it.

Oh yeah? Come down here and enforce it.

    I'm kidding. Mostly.

    But.

Highlanders: Home top blue, great. Away top maroon red.
    Crusaders: Home top red...
    Reds: Home top red

Crazy. We should make every team play all their away games in pink until they sort it out.

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

I'm always amazed by the sheer volume of foliage that has appeared in the suburbs since I were a lad.

It's the revelation (albeit somewhat glacial) that it's quite tricky to tag a hedge.

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

Upthread, I wondered if anyone was slightly nervous about this development, is there really no one else who finds it slightly odd that their backyard is now public?

My backyard isn't public. What's public is the view from the street, which was always public. Now, okay, the house we just moved from looks like this (taken earlier in the morning than I ever saw that place), so maybe I can afford to be complacent.

But then yesterday I talked to my mum, whose house in Timaru is also on Street View. She said she hadn't noticed the car. I said, "Oh, but you weren't home. Greg was, though." That did give her the willies just a little bit.

  • Up Front: Hellfire's a Promise Away,

There really should be some sort of warning system...

I was a really, really terrible girlfriend a couple of times myself.

OTOH, we had this friend who used to get his female mates to go up to new girls at parties and say 'See that guy? Stay away from him'. Worked like a charm.

You know, the funny thing about university for me, was the time that it took apparently intelligent and attractive young women to spot they were going out with complete dickheads.

To be fair, it wasn't just the women who seemed unable to spot the dickness of their partners. I may say this partially because my friends adopted the word 'prat' to mean 'anyone who's seen Emma naked'.

Roses and a Merc do go a long way with a girl who's used to motorbikes and being hit round the face.
