  • Field Theory: A competitive competition,

Isn’t there a cricket test on?

Here you are, Ian O'Brien blogs from his bathtub.

I was half listening to Radio Sport this morning while packing, and they named this their #3 blog of the year.

  • Hard News: The Interesting Party,

    We outed you!

Well, that's never happened before. Okay, not unless I was playing Taboo.

My mother still thinks you're dodgy, btw.

  • Up Front: Christmas Stockings,

I do sincerely think that everyone would benefit from a spell of customer-facing retail work.

Now that I have a minute... from a 'making people not behave like total smeg-heads' POV, I heartily agree. It's just the idea of then trying to get customer service from people who've no idea what they're doing gives me the heebies.

Not Always Right has done something I wasn't expecting - it's given me a new respect for our customer base at Bardic Web. Because okay, yes, sometimes I have to deal with people being either hugely aggressive or unbelievably stupid. But not THAT stupid.

  • Hard News: The Interesting Party,

what I can do, what I've always done, right from 1983 when I worked at Rip It Up, is throw an interesting party. That's what this is.

I hate to think what the state of your carpet is after two years.

I love System enormously, and I'm so pleased that it's surpassed my most optimistic predictions. Even the Insanely Offended Emails are kind of sweet in their own way.

  • Up Front: Christmas Stockings,

Before I run off and take the cat to the vet (all kinds of seasonal WTF there), The 213 Things Skippy is no longer allowed to do in the US Army. Old but hysterical.

  • Southerly: England's Pleasant Pastures Seen,

It's just that there were too many people in far too small a space.

You can get eleven people in a mini, if you put one in the boot. You can even drive like that. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. I think it works on the same odd physical principle that allows you to walk huge distances when you're pissed.

  • Hard News: The Flashing Question Mark,

It's not like the borg took over our brains and forced us to exclaim 'dude!' at regular intervals.

No, that wasn't the borg. I think we all know who that was.

For instance, I routinely say "pwned" now. Which is weird.

Dude, you have been SO pwned by the interwebs.

I imagine most people in NZ have a range of language influences... it's interesting

Indeed, and switch backwards and forwards as the occasion demands, which is one of the great beauties of language. I'm about to go down to my mother's, which will involve eliminating net-isms and upping my blokey-Westie ratio.

  • Up Front: Absence of Malice,

What if, in response to this new testing system, cheating becomes the norm? Meaning your children are competing not just with individual cheaters but whole networks of children cheating for a better future?

I can't see why the new testing regime would cause this, given no previous testing regime has.

However, my son is off next year to a school (Unlimiited Paenga Tawhiti) which doesn't have a standard curriculum. I'm struggling to imagime how you would cheat at a Learner-Directed Experience. Even getting outside help is considered a skill.

  • Up Front: Absence of Malice,

Can I suggest that both versions of Emma log out and then log back in as themselves?

That's one of those sentences I never thought I'd hear.

Still, nice to see Isabel back to being Isabel. I'm sure it's much less traumatic for both our partners that way.
