Thanks for the link Lance, I don't see how new legislation will improve occupational safety and health if the prosecution of it is not really backed by political will.
Peter Whittall and PRM were prosecuted in such a way as they could never be retried in court. The fine was higher than the maximum in the new legislation as well as $3M in compensation to the families.
Whittall and PRM later cried bankrupt and reneged on the fine and payed out $5,000 to each family.
John Key did not allow a union representative on the commission of inquiry that led to this legislation as the representative ,in his words, would have been "biased".

I did think at the time this letter was disclosed that a path would be beaten to the PM's door and the government would collapse, Whittall brought to (judicial) account, and re regulation in dangerous industry would naturally follow. I suppose I'm just young and naive.
The same protocol in Christchurch, repair the business district before the working class areas.

The boy has been charged, which is probably more to do with local politics than the law, but the charge will almost certainly be thrown out of court for lack of evidence.

I suppose Key has to weigh up the damage Collins can do to National from her current position within the party, which seems to be ramping up alarmingly, against the loss of two ministers within a fortnight, which makes the National look like a badly holed boat. Almost feel sorry for the bugger.
