I s’pose you all know the joke that goes, “A web designer walks into a bar….and walks out again as soon as he realises they’re using tables.”
a debugger that checks comments for internal logical consistency?
Gio! How could we have arguments then?!

Wind-up torches are great! Is it possible to get them without sirens in, though? My one has given me a number of bad moments when I've accidentally turned that on. While stumbling out to the long-drop in the middle of an earthquake-ridden night is not a time one wishes to be unexpectedly holding a siren. And TBH I wonder when *would* be a good time!

This post by London blogger Laurie Penny might be of interest. I don’t know anything about her, but she makes some good points.
Most of the people who will be writing, speaking and pontificating about the disorder this weekend have absolutely no idea what it is like to grow up in a community where there are no jobs, no space to live or move, and the police are on the streets stopping-and-searching you as you come home from school. The people who do will be waking up this week in the sure and certain knowledge that after decades of being ignored and marginalised and harassed by the police, after months of seeing any conceivable hope of a better future confiscated, they are finally on the news. In one NBC report, a young man in Tottenham was asked if rioting really achieved anything:
"Yes,” said the young man. “You wouldn’t be talking to me now if we didn’t riot, would you?"
"Two months ago we marched to Scotland Yard, more than 2,000 of us, all blacks, and it was peaceful and calm and you know what? Not a word in the press. Last night a bit of rioting and looting and look around you."
Eavesdropping from among the onlookers, I looked around. A dozen TV crews and newspaper reporters interviewing the young men everywhere ‘’’

I cant insure a Booker Prize
That’s crappy.
have you heard the wonderful story of how some Nobel prize winners in Denmark dissolved their medals in strong acid during WWII to hide them from the invading Germans? After the war the gold was recovered and the Nobel Institute re-forged the medals. Truly! (last paragraph on the page)

I thought the Media 7 science special was a very interesting show, but curiously I think the Winston-and-Gluckman segment was the least interesting part. For all that Winston said about not talking down to the audience, he was far more self-important than anyone else there. Mike Joy was wonderful, and Pauline Harris was also a stand-out for me. It's so great to see clever, distinguished people who also come across as regular Kiwis.

Hard News: Media7: A new censor -- and a…, in reply to
Oh that's interesting. And I agree his comment on the Treaty was unhelpful. I guess I felt the article was making his personality the issue when I wanted to hear what he had to say on the issues themselves. But maybe he was the wrong person to be asking.

that Addley story was so good

Thanks everybody for your comments and links. Once again, when I don't understand what's going on, I come to Public Address and things begin to make sense!

Sorry this is OT but I've been away from the internet for 10 days and then I find this idiotic nonsense featured by Stuff. Robert Winston is a brilliant communicator and an expert in his field, and this reporter has been unable to restrain her sarcasm. Jesus wept.
