Hi Amy, have to say I'm with Sasha on this Glee/ deaf choir thing. To me it was the way the context was framed and then played out.
There has been no other scene where a team has joined in on another's performance.
To do so in this instance was obviously intended to illustrate some kind of kin-ship and support in a level playing field kind of way. But it was also interpretable as condescending and patronising in that it suggested their deaf performance was somehow incomplete with a side of 'oh look at cute handicapped people trying to be like us.'
I thought the intention of the performance was to practice in front of another team etc - in which case all their practice and such was rendered irrelevent as the other team bowled in over the top.
For sure, I see your point of view, but as we have suggested previously, it is very difficult to see this act repeated with any other choir. At the very least you ask permission first or perhaps wait till they are finished and then join in on the repeat.
Of course it's just a television show, but I don't think the underlying message is all useful.Much more important - me bonny wee boy just said his first word...igloo.

Lucy, what I meant was that your discussion could be taken as being about whether these televisual geeks were realistic, and how their particular world view doesn't necessarily mesh with those who don't share their areas of interest.
then when Beyonce came up it seemed like your discussion directly paralleled...oh never mind. It doesn't matter.
much more interesting is a clip of ye olde sci-fi series Timeslip I was watching yesterday that starred John Taylor in way pre-Duran Duran days.
and going back to that Glee scene with the deaf choir - dad-dom means I'm home of a Friday now... - that did strike a very odd tone. Would they have got up and taken over with any other choir? It struck me as extremely patronising.

not wanting to interrupt, but it's rather amusing to see a pendantic discussion on sci-fi characterisation and the rights and wrongs on various depictions of geekery as related to the real world while also confessing to having no idea about recent Beyonce singles...
I can't tell which one's the pot and which one's the kettle.

hell yeah, and I was a tradesman drummer as well.
but the tools that really bring out my inner serial killer are the hippies who take their wee drums in their wee carry-bags to festivals and sit in earnest, crosslegged circles banging out the most tedious rubbish for hours and hours and hours...it'd be more fun listening to a field full of Farfisa organs (Farfisi?) set on samba.
they belong in the same box as secular gospel choirs and faux-Latin gleesters.
as for gig solos, they tend to get a little to close to the world of jugging and mime...just say no.
man, my chest feels so much better now.

yeah, so was I. so much so, that I didn't really do much hollahing or even pay a hell of a lot of attention when he left the stage.
then they started dismantling the cymbal stands and my shoulders drooped a tad.
the group we'd been dancing in the aisle with just shrugged at each other and trudged their seperate ways...with smiles on but. -

truly gutted by the state of 'take me to the river-nessless' and I'd happily have pulled the plug on the second keyboard player in the collared t-shirt and tie, but sheesh, the Reverend still has the pipes. And opening with L-O-V-E (Love) was a master stroke.
Haven't been that excited about a gig since James Brown at the St James.
dunno about the Opensouls soul set though - seemed more songwriting by numbers. and the drummer may need to check out some Booker T vids. Mate, leave the fullkit rolls for the Europe covers. Their funk track Turn It Up at the close seemed to fit them better.
couldn't see the fight from where we were, but one of the Opensouls horn players marnused them good and proper.
