If we opted for STV, it would have multi-member electorates.
In that case I wouldn't be too opposed to STV (would still prefer MMP) and it would definitely be preferable to preferential voting.
I now feel comfortable making STV my candidate for the second question in the referendum - if it were only the preferential version then I would choose SMP.
Though that now leads me to the can of worms in that answering the second question of whether to choose my most preferred option or the one I think most likely to lose in a run-off against MMP:)

Thanks for that.
So if STV were to be implement in New Zealand at government level would it be likely to be single member electorates? Because if so I imagine we would end up back in a position very similar to FPP where National and Labour would hold nearly all the seats.
To me it sounds like multi-member electorates are more preferable as it then allows more proportional representation.

Thanks for the article.
The thing I am still curious about is how STV differs from the Preferential voting system using in Australian federal elections? Is it in the method used to count the votes?

I don't see how anyone would have done anything different to Suarez. You're standing on the goal line and the ball is about to go into the net putting you out of the world cup, of course you are going to stop it anyway you can. Are all the people who are judging him saying they would have just watched the ball go into the net?

These statistics come from Google Analytics, which gives us 89,519 visits and 276,648 page views as of this morning (most of the other figures were current as of yesterday afternoon when I wrote most of the post, number nerds). Our internal log records give us 160,008 visits and 687,411 page views. Go figure.
People like me who use their ad blocking add-ons to block Google Analytics would contribute to this discrepancy I imagine.

Ok, I didn't realise that sorry. It brought a chuckle to my morning thinking it was a typo.

moral panic that various groups and the media won't let anyone challenge by the old saw of accusing them of being paediatricians
I think that's the funniest typo I have ever read here:)
