  • Southerly: Summer of The L.e.d.s,

What do you think of the Nouvelle Vague albums?

the first one was great when it came out a few years back, but I think the second, aside from the great Heaven 17 cover, is a case of overstaying your welcome...the joke only worked once.

They've done some quite tasty original stuff elsewhere though....

Given that great tracts of it have been built in a disposable fashion, how might you go about remaking it, I wonder?

it's about to get worse when the, should be listed, old council workshops in Nelson / Cook Sts, get knocked down for a new "lifestyle mall".

    Melbourne has what edge?

in food anyway....best in Australasia by a fair wack. I used to have to visit Melbourne on business three or four times a year and it was always a matter of working out which eateries I could fit in on each trip....

There's a little Sicilian place near the racecourse.....

Sydney's pretty bad, Melbourne (which is an international city like none here in New Zealand) not so much.

perhaps true in the past but the past decade has changed that in Auckland, which has a mix that equals the capital of Victoria and is certainly a much browner city that any in Australia.

Drive down parts of Dominion Road and try and find a shop sign purely in English now....and many is the time I've stood at a pedestrian crossing in Queen Street as the only Pakeha face....I think its fantastic...

[Written by Brian Wilson,] the song was originally going to be released on [the Beach Boys] classic 1966 album Pet Sounds. Mike Love however objected to the title of the song and some of the lyrics and insisted that it be changed.

Much as I would like to subscribe to this, and add my voice to the odious Mike Love chorus (he is btw), Brian Wilson has dismissed this by saying it was he that felt nervous and changed the lyric. And I would tend to believe him. Despite the name on the record and Love's verbose claims to his "hard work" (made after he tried to prevent it's release and its subsequent acclaim) it was in all essence a Wilson solo work with the odd guest vocal.

Did anyone else out there know that the Frank Black song "Hang on to Your Ego" was a cover? Of the Beach Boys song "I know there's an Answer"?

that's been a bonus track on quite a few of the countless Pet Sounds Anniversary issues...which still sounds best in Brian's original mono mix I think...

  • Hard News: Appeasing Osama,

    Manakura,

I think a little of both. Many Javanese are, naturally, as with all religion, very devout but clearly there is no clash. Islam came to Java about 600 years ago when Arab traders settled on the North Coast.

Generally, as with many religions, not least of which is Christianity, it was overlaid over local traditions. Hence the Islam practiced in Java varies greatly from the very conservative on the north coast and in Madura, to the more complex merging with past animist beliefs and the Hindu and Buddhist past elsewhere.

Then the Europeans came and threw Christianity into the mix.

Down the road from me is a Mosque, a Hindu temple and a church...all share a playgroup. Up in the hills near here the Hindu faithful still sacrifice to their ancient gods without seeing any contradiction.

  • Hard News: Appeasing Osama,

I believe this makes Islam the only major organised religion that explicitly protects the property rights of women

Javanese society, overwhelmingly Muslim of course, recognises the mother as the source of societal power. The family's mana flows, in a very complicated manner (Javanese society is very very complicated) from the woman and a man often gets his status from his mother. Sukarno's mana came from his Balinese mother, and indeed, his daughter was the 4th President of Indonesia.

  • Hard News: Appeasing Osama,

I'm not resiling from my criticism of radical Islam, but I figure not all of the 1,300,000,000 Muslims on our planet can be entirely bad.

the reaction to the word "Muslim" is some quarters brings to mind that old fifties schlock horror "Them", which I saw years ago when the Classic Cinema was just that, with people running amok in the desert screaming "them, them...". Witness the attempt to swiftboat Obama, whose crime is twofold...having Hussein as a middle name, and allegedly being trained as a radical "Muslim" at the age of six in Java. Bizarrely, it was deemed newsworthy across a variety of outlets that should have known better.

Don't forget the Netherworld Dancing Toys comeback For Tomorrow, a paen to the new retirement savings program.

laugh you may, but such a thing, or a variation of it, was actually proposed in all seriousness

  • Random Play: Rock Follies,

Oh, we can laugh, but does anyone remember Double J and Twice the T and Ray Columbus' 1990 smash hit "She's A Mod/Mod Rap"?

"My mother was a teen back in '65.
She knew how to rock, yeah, she knew how to jive."

Ray is a really nice guy but when I was managing The Screaming Meemees a lifetime back he approached me about doing a duet of She's A Mod with them. I politely declined but it seems he didn't let the idea go, waited a few years and then pounced on DJ & TWT.

    I had to smile.....
