What a lovely post, Stella, thankyou. I watched the news item on it and was very impressed by the beautiful design. Now, when's your next book due out?
One vote pro-Dobbo, btw. Terminally uncool
Not in this house he's not!

Very true, very true, danyl. And don't we all need to stop doing that? It's the old " I hate my boyfriend, he's a wanker. Oh hang on, I'm getting back with him, and you criticised him, and now you're not my friend anymore". Highly tedious.

I read all these posts and think how much better informed I could be on this subject, but the truth is, I just can't bring myself to care. So I would offer only this comment. Why, regardless of their political persuasion, do so many residents of the USA persist in getting all riled up when others criticise their government? So many times, when I've had discussions with American friends about federal policies, back in the day when I gave a sh**, they get all defensive, even when they didn't vote for the government in power, as such. Me no understand. But then I don't live in the greatest democracy in the world. Heh.

My mother insisted on...and got...The Goons Ying-Tong song played at her funeral.
That's brilliant! She must have been an extraordinary character.

Is it only me who finds the Jessica Simpson video unbelievably sexist?

I think one of the most important NZ websites must surely be the White Pages online. I was helping to organise a class reunion a few years ago, and managed to track down about 250 people just through using that website alone. Brilliant. The Auckland City Library website is exceptional, and I think the way they have managed to get their entire database online is astounding. Very important resource, that. On the other hand, what is with Whitcoulls? Crap site. It's not only not good now, it was never any good. Bah humbug.

That's lovely. Really. And genius. I'm all for shutting down TV every night at midnight again. Might do us all some good.

What a fine Aunt, Lindsay. So glad she had a lovely send-off.

Oh yes, fond memories! Franklin Rd in Auckland in my case - 12 people in a 5 bedroomed flat. $25 rent, 12.50 kitty. Had to walk outside to the slimy shower that no-one ever cleaned. Outrageous parties. Vodka jelly and alcohol poisoning anyone?

"Children need to play and risk getting scrapped knees etc, and the odd broken bone. It helps them work out in their heads what limits there are. they need to stretch, they need to run around, they need to experiment with finding out what they cannot handle and what they can." Couldn't agree more, Liz. As a teacher in public kindergartens of children between the ages of 3 and 5, I'm always seeking ways to create environments that provide a challenge and provoke some development of risk assessment. How do children learn how to assess risk, and what constitutes risk, if they never face any?
