I probably have more lengthy things to say, but I'm just taking a moment to note that telling Deborah women who want to speak out against rape culture need to "take their turn" is so hilariously obtuse a stance that I am actually giggling.

I'd say a large proportion of the people in Auckland can't afford a rug from Ponsonby either, Paul, because all their money is going on renting shitty uninsulated housing stock.

My husband is obsessed with an Android version of that white noise app - we first downloaded it for baby number two, the initially terrible sleeper - and uses it to fall asleep every night. It works quite well for me too (although I can drop off without external help it seems to be faster with the white noise going).

I sleep well and heavily, which I know is quite obnoxious and I'm very sorry. I could quite easily sleep through someone coming into my house and removing all my furniture (don't get any ideas, you guys). These child-raising years have so far been a series of literal rude awakenings. Damn baby monitors, ruining my hibernation time.

Despite agreeing with that piece in large part, I think it's pretty weird to blame the dehumanisation of rapists on feminists. Who, after all, are the ones who came up with "rape culture" as a concept. That theory makes rapists all too human, not monstrous at all.*
*Actually a point made far more eloquently by @tui_talk on Twitter. I am merely repeating it.

I don't believe in the bad apples theory either, but I suppose it's easier for me to understand a "culture of cover your ass and protect your own" than a "culture of ignoring and blaming rape victims". As it is, it seems to be a little bit of the former and a lot of the latter in a toxic combination. So yay.
