Tony Kennedy raises a point that drives me a little nuts.
"Fact is that which enough people believe. Truth is measured by how fervently they believe it."
"The media" spends an awful lot of time and effort reporting on what people believe to be true. Example, a recent headline in the UK stating that 58% of the population "believe" UK troops are dieing because they are ill-equiped.
No attempt to report on whether this "belief" actually bares any relation to the state of affairs on the groud. It is more a measure of whether someone's message is making it into the public conciousness.
That is why the Republicans are currently running a campaign questioning Obama's citizenship. I doubt any of them believe it themselves but they know that it will become true in the minds of many so long as they keep repeating the lie.
The shame of it is this, the very journalists who are crying into their beers about the death of their profession and evil bloggers leaching their livelihoods are, and have been for far too long, buying into this MO and making it easy for liars to perpetuate these lies.

Russell, actually, Hooten might be helping their cause. For a political commentator to use this information on Radio NZ, National, in the way he has will strengthen their complaint about the impact of this breach of privacy on their lives.
So, I am sure his intentions are good, what do you think, Craig?

Also, this is another one of Keith's Posts That I Don't Understand.
You know the bit where Nick Smith said, "if we do this* it will cost us a shit load of money". Well the report he says support his statement doesn't. In fact it says pretty much the opposite.
*this being cut carbon emmissions.

Craig, those people are getting what they are entitled to in terms of benefit. How does that detract from the points they were making?
Or is your sub-text that any one getting money from the state should shut up, be grateful, and take what is coming to them?
Maybe next time a patient complains about the Health Service all their medical records should be made available. What do you think?

Er, Craig
Indeed -- meanwhile
May I be the first to say, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, WTF?

Currently family in the UK *only* buy NZ butter etc. because they, rightly, view our farmers as the least subsidised and most efficient in the world. This attitude will change very fast if they see us as one of the dirtiest countries in the world. Just saying.

I was wondering whether Cadbury's decision was more to do with the shift in manufacturing from NZ. I suspect the plants in Aussie were not set up in the same was as those here.
Pure conjecture on my part.
