  • Random Play: It's Kiwi music, but not as…,

"Home, Foreshore and Sea" was performed by Trinity Roots at a Green Party conference. Alas, someone forgot to press record to capture the candidate dance footage and soundtrack from the event.

  • Up Front: I Love it When a Plan Comes Together,

Previously Tamaki has claimed to have exorcised the "homosexual spirit" from parishioners. But he now says he has adopted a greater openness and cites conversations he has had with airline cabin stewards as proof.

Yes, I overheard Brian and a charming lesbian cabin steward agreeing "a muff is enough" only the other day

    Ange,
The GST EFTPOS thing really is a brilliant idea - would help everybody - be good if it was a Credit Card thing too.
http://thinksmall.co.nz was built for the purpose of suggesting and promoting ideas like this - I would encourage you to go over and offer it as an issue and a solution. I will support it in a hearts beat

Alastair, I think you may have a very low resting heartbeat!

  • Speaker: Surviving Small II: Changing Process,

oh, and in the technology i couldn't do with out, a simple and ridiculously cheap bit of software I bought online called Officetime - it records time spent with clients, links to diaries, shows time spent on projects and even generates invoices. Gotta love that.

  • Speaker: Surviving Small II: Changing Process,

As a small business, keeping receipts is the one thing that drives me nuts. Is there any way that an eftpos transaction could be GST enabled, so that the receipt information was recorded. I realise this would involve Banks and eftpos, but I would happily pay to not have to keep, file, enter these records when I fill the gas tank. It is such an outdated concept. Even if the GST information from the retailer could be gathered later from some kind of code in the bank statement?

and laptops too, just while we are wish listing.

  • Speaker: Surviving Small,

I love working from home - as long as I can do a quick commute into town for meetings it works well (remembering to remove gardening shoes, a mistake you only make once). A good coffee machine is essential. I have some clients come here, but only for individual mentoring/career planning type sessions. I prefer to travel out to meetings generally. Any contractors I use also work from their homes.

As for business attire at home, lets just say I'm glad video conferencing isn't used by my clients yet.

  • Speaker: Surviving Small,

I'm wondering what helps maintain the readiness to spot opportunities, innovate and take risks? I've noticed it in my own business (learning and organisation development), should I take that bit of work I can do, but isn't in line with where I am trying to take my business? (I didn't).
I've also been recollecting the 1980s when the public service numbers were cut heavily. There were consequences that for years impacted negatively on productivity and efficiency. I noticed for example many organisations discarded their internal learning and development function. With it went a lot of institutional knowledge, as people in these roles were often the technical experts with information to share. The idea of outsourcing this work was fine in theory, but there was no infrastructure to support this. Many learning and development providers (including tertiary institutions) were funded around individuals, and courses were targetted to them, not to business. There just wasn't the capability in the sector to analyse business needs and deliver relevant learning and development. Its still not that great now.
Thanks for this forum, great idea.
