  • Hard News: Public Address Radio,

aucklandzoo@aucklandcity.govt.nz if you want to tell them that perhaps they acted precipitously. And I think they did.

The real risk Burton posed to the zoo was a PR risk. And they reacted in classic PR weasel fashion.

    Did Simon Travaglia ghost-write that?

May have preceded that. Karelia is entrenched in my psyche, alps are in there, but the overriding memory is a rushing river in the bush.

Me too. Joanne, I was 20 in 1990, and that stratum of brain cells is still fairly functional.

  • Hard News: Some Politics,

Some of the attorneys were cut loose because they weren't prosecuting voter fraud and illegal immigration cases.

If I understand correctly, that goes to the very heart of the issue. Many people think that that is an ostensible, post-hoc reason only, and that there are some very odd and ugly coincidences in the firing, relating to pending investigations of Republican corruption on the one hand, and a refusal to trump up charges against Democrats before the last election on the other. It certainly doesn't look good to read that the prosecutors were divided into "loyal Bushies" and others. Thus the call for investigation is aimed at proving or laying to rest those concerns.

I for one would love to see a piece on the state of research in New Zealand. Decades of wasted effort - that's a powerful (and very sad) line.

Re the film - I'm too young (b 1970) and yet I immediately knew what Russell was talking about. So I must have been shown it some time in the 70s.

Re the accents - didn't the NZBC of old put a lot of work into imposing some sort of RP on to all its announcers? And didn't they stop in the 1970's? That's what I recall being told.

As for Angela D'Audney, she went to Epsom Girls Grammar with my mother, who spoke very similarly. I think you'll find a great many women who went through EGGS at that time all sound quite refined to the modern ear.

  • Hard News: TVNZ on Demand actually…,

According to discussion on the NZLUG mailing list today, poking around the HTML source reveals URLs for files which will open in mplayer:

I clicked through to a Fair Go episode, looked at the source, found the URL of the actual video file which is nicely listed there (a text search for flv will help), and opened it with mplayer.

And don't forget Singer's links to Alexis de Tocquville Institution links as well. If you have been following SCO vs IBM at all, you'll know that AdTI is essentially a paid mouthpiece which churns out grossly inaccurate hit pieces on demand. Who pays them? To the extent that they disclose their sources, largely front groups for America's super-rich (eg Scaife).

If I believed in ghosts I'd be sure poor old de Tocqueville is haunting the bastards now, screaming at them for abusing his name.

  • Hard News: Shonky scepticism,

I am well aware of the uncategorisable nature of Judaism, Nonetheless, the people who used the term "Jewish science" believed that Jews were a race. And as I say, they disparaged the ideas because they despised the people who came up with them -- the complete reverse of the situation here, where people are disparaged because of their ideas.

Nobody is disparaging Ball for his nationality, or his religion, or his race, or anything except his odd ideas, and his claims about his credentials. His ideas are central of course, and his credentials are perhaps the one thing a lay audience can definitely have an informed opinion on. You seem to be implying that to disbelieve him is to participate in some sort of unjustified persecution, akin to that visited on Jews or blacks, and this is absolutely not the case.
