There was a young guy on TV1 last night who I believe was head of USAR for the Fire Service - he was magnificent. His description of how and why they were making decisions around building searches (why they were moving from CTV etc) was clear, detailed and still incredibly respectful. Amazing guy...

I know it's a phrase... and it was on another site... and it's February... but "hopefully a bear will fall in it" for Word of the Year please.

Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to
Matthew I've been hearing that too - the pullout from CTV is purely an evacuation out of the danger area for the Grand Chancellor. That will be REALLY hard to take for family of those inside... (/speculation)

One thing I found strange in TV3's coverage last night was a specific long-winded warning from Hilary Barry that they were about to show "raw from the camera" footage from the CTV building and people should be warned. She continued to apologise over top of the footage as a body covered in a blood-soaked sheet was removed and then placed alongside a row of similar sheets.
Yet they then repeatedly showed ONLY that scene from the footage? It was an odd situation to have been apologising for possibly graphic imagery and then actively choose to show only that graphic imagery again and again.
Just one observation amongst what seemed to be otherwise a professional job in extremely tricky conditions.Been trying to keep the 2yo away from some of the imagery, but he seemed to get this morning that the video of all those ambulances in the park were there for "go to hostipal?"

Free voluntary contraception made available to a group of people that otherwise couldn't afford it is all good - but when delivered as a recommendation in a report that also clearly pushes for a coerced reduction in births of people receiving benefits it really is creepy...

Matthew that was my thought. Unbelievable, now I'm actually in a bit of shock

Wait, 65 people?! Bloody hell...

Massive points to the Dean of the Cathedral who has quite possibly lost his important building but has said it doesn't matter and it's only making sure people are ok that counts.

Glad to hear my family all came through OK, but my cousin who is the Head Nurse (IIRC) at Christchurch Hospital will not be having an enjoyable evening I suspect...

Interestingly I think it's the "wait for the book" bit that is causing the heat. If he'd said "we've passed that bridge and won't be relitigating it so my position doesn't matter" (or a smoother political version of) then I suspect a few people would have thought "way to avoid the question" but no more than that. But actually admitting you have a position but won't publically state it is trying to be all neutrally centrist but coming off as sans-principle.
Points to Steven Oates for pushing him on it though. And that pink jacket was GORGEOUS :)
