Joe – there are a set of spoonbills that hang out in McCormacks Bay for part of the year. You can often see them standing around on one of those artificial islands. They also sometimes go to the mouth of the Avon (just upstream of Bridge St) and fish in the shallows there.

it might take community-led action unless enough of the politicians get their shit together.
I think unless we agitate, nothing will change, except more cyclists will die. The Dutch got there by mass protests.

Sad to see the hatey comments on this article about a cyclist injured in Chch. How many deaths and injuries will it take for NZ to decide we have to do better for cyclists?
The wife of the injured man has started this FB page.

Lilith – love that Andrew Bird. One of my favourite singer/songwriters is called Sam Sallon.
Oh, awesome, thank you. I will seek out his album!
Re: Andrew Bird: I’ve played Noble beast such a lot, it’s a great album.
You might also like Sean Hayes, if you don’t know him already:

” it was more than a collection of songs or a performance, it was a phenomenon. Maybe all the more so because she’s not overwhelmingly talented. The minute I hear the whisperings of “how dare she,” I’m interested. I don’t have to like it, it doesn’t have to be worthy.

I want to like Gaga
I have mixed feelings about her. She’s so goofy; she also seems to have a sense of fun and an appreciation of irony that Madonna never had.*
However her music was exactly what I needed after the Sept 2010 earthquake, when we were having so many aftershocks and my flatmate would start screaming every time. Gaga’s OTT and cheerful pop really helped! :-)
* American Pie as if it were a patriotic song, for heavens sake!

‘how bad could it be?’ Worse.
I did warn you! Hard to believe she was more sophisticated in her early 20s than she is now. Or that's how it seems.
