  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

I wonder if any of those Lincoln students went along on crutches or in wheelchairs to make 'satirical political commentary' on the 200,000 or so disabled people who were also killed by the Nazis?

  • Hard News: Bill's Troubles,

Hilary, which organisation do you reckon would do best with this, and handle it sensitively?

They're two different questions. If it is a policy change it has come from the Minister of Health so he should announce it. If it has happened because one/some of the many organisations that approve or provide respite care have run out of their ring-fenced budget then that is up to the contract holder or the contract relationship manager to deal with and they could be in the Ministry of Health, or a DHB or a needs assessment agency somewhere. Whatever, it is a responsibility of the Minister of Health to either announce as policy or fix up.

As for doing anything sensitively, that's another issue.

  • Hard News: The new wave,

Te Papa is very crowded today being a wet day in the school holidays. Awesome Forces section particularly busy with people examining the giant tectonic plate globe. Great that it is all free. The conference rooms have harbour views but no sloshing bowl effects to be seen, fortunately.

  • Hard News: The new wave,

10.50 am expected to reach Wellington. East coast earlier and Auckland later, according to latest reports. But likely to be revised during the morning I suppose. Inexact science and lots of 'variables'.

  • Hard News: The new wave,

That's an incredibly huge earthquake. 8.3. Wellington could be vulnerable. I'm at a conference all day at Te Papa on the harbour waterfront - hopefully safer in the harbour than on the coast? But as Te Papa is a hub of earthquake experts it's probably a safe place to be (ie will evacuate the building if not).

  • Hard News: Bill's Troubles,

It's something that needs wide publicity and I haven't seen any.

  • Hard News: Bill's Troubles,

Also English's Government has quietly halved the allowance of respite care for the elderly, from two weeks to one.

When did this happen? That's going to affect a lot of people quite negatively.

Another thing I like about WoW is that it makes you (well me anyway) want to drag out that old sewing machine and all those bags of unused material and other bits and pieces in the garage, and 'create' something. That's how a lot of entries happen apparently.

  • Hard News: Invasion of the pagan matrons,

    It is called Second Skin.

That was my favourite this year too. But I think because I was quite close this time and could see the intricacy of the pleating and how it moved. The people around me clapped when the model came by, which is always a good sign. But my friends further back liked the more spectacular-from-afar ones. That's why the wooden dress won because it looked great close up and also from a distance. Quite a trick for designers. But the costumes are really secondary to the theatricality of the event. Tip: if you can get tickets for the charity dress rehearsal night it's much cheaper.

Re lunch in Wellington, if you have transport or feel like catching a bus or train, Bella Italia in Nevis Street Petone is an Italian experience.
