  • Yellow Peril: My black heart bleeds,

From Inky's piece linked to in RB's post today:

"Our reliance on them for a vicarious sense of worth is too big a burden."

Reliance on another for a vicarious sense of worth is bad news for both ends of the relationship.

    Oh, I accept it - I just don't like it :)

I've avoided expressing that opinion in all the other rugby threads because it would be churlish. It just gets a little overpowering sometimes. It freaks me out when I hear things like "national disaster" and I can't tell whether the speaker (or audience) know they're exaggerating or not.

I always felt that strictly from an anthem perspective, "Deutschland uber alles" was right up there. I mean, the tune is Haydn, and the words are aggressively nationalistic.

A nondescript, boring anthem is a mark of a country that has the right attitude in life. Don't let's change it.

  • Yellow Peril: My black heart bleeds,

This where I finally confess, having stayed PA-silent on the matter, that I could not, do not, will not ever give a toss about rugby, beyond enjoying a pleasant athletic spectacle. I loathe and detest the local cult, all the more so as it becomes yet another tool of corporate thought control. And my fervent hope is that the AB's lose, lose and lose again until we nationally decide to put our energies into something else, or at least until it's socially acceptable to say hey ho, it's just a game.

I feel about the ABs as though I were in an Onion article. Area man indifferent to fate of area sports team. They are Area sports team.

The only that comforts me is that it must be a wonderfully safe, pleasant and prosperous country we live in where there is nothing more important going on.

  • Island Life: A bar of two halves,

I remember in 2000 being on the train back from the stadium in Paris after the All Blacks had just thumped France. ("Ou est Lomu?!" they chanted again and again throughout the match).

The carriage was full of locals (many of whom looked like they played, with broken noses and cauliflower ears in abundance). There were handshakes and smiles all round and good grace in general.

The next day I got on the train to leave back for London. A customs official looked at my passport, and hung on to it. He glared at me and said "is no good!" I blanched, as you would. "Not after last night!" He chortled, patted me on the back and sent me on my way.

  • Hard News: A fairly weird encounter,

Could one of our hard-bitten journo contributors explain the origin of the term "vice girl?"

    Gutted

    Boom boom!

... an eatery in New Zealand where young blokes tottered round in mobility-restricting costumes and called me "Mistress"?

Male sexuality being what it is, they would be the customers and pay you. And I bet there's room for a bar like that in Tokyo.

  • Cracker: Kick it in the Butt (& Friday Links),

I found drinking deadly to efforts to give up smoking. It weakened my resolve, and face it, nicotine's an upper, goes nicely with the downer ethanol. So I made a rule that I would not bum cigarettes of my drinking companions. I would always buy a new pack, and donate the unfinished pack to someone who looked like they need them on the way home.

Banning smoking in pubs has made it a hell of a lot easier to avoid backsliding.

Having noted that: I think that at some point, you're ready, and you stop. I've been doing some interesting reading about addiction. There is a theory out there that Alcoholics Anonymous and their fellow travellers have done terribly damage to the whole practice of giving up, with their (untested, unscientific) notions of once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic, that you can never go to moderation, and so on. Carr is equally unscientific, but I like his "just stop, idiot" attitude.

  • Hard News: Invisible Harblz,

Anyone who is big enough to see it can tell in an instant Helen Clark is a gifted leader and the outstanding politician of her times.

I think you'll find that gift is called "practise and hard work". Key'll get better at it if he has a mind to.
