Including the suggestions that Labour stand aside for Norman? C'mon.

nobody needs to stand aside. quite a few people on this thread have said that all parties should give it their best shot. so it is annoying when someone suggests that the Greens might need to stand back while the Big Boys fight it out--stand aside so as not to let National win by "splitting the vote".

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

If National is running Labour very close (or, indeed, ahead of Labour), Green voters will have a chance to switch candidates (as will Act voters).

and why is it that the Greens are always the ones expected to sacrifice themselves for the sake of Labour? (but funnily enough it doesn't seem to work that way for Act/National)

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

I think the Greens do a pretty fine job of marginalising themselves. They had to be helped out on 2005 and *still* didn't get them numbers.

ah, no. the Greens have been shat on so many times by Labour ("the party of nz's working class"--yeah, right) that they might be forgiven for thinking someone had painted a large "Composting Toilet" sign on their office door (though only visible to the Labour Party leadership).

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

i agree with you Sacha. but there is an issue of some people not recognising any obligation to pay for music recordings. the question remains: is this a significant number of people? more research in various markets would be useful in determining the weight of this problem. it might turn out to be insignificant compared to people who do buy.

the Norwegian research is useful in that it suggests that the reality of unpaid downloads is that it results in higher levels of purchased music. i wonder why this type of consumer research is so difficult to find in other markets? is the research really so expensive to undertake? seems unlikely to me.

straw man fights back after suffering savage home invasion!!!

ah, yeah, right. taking something you haven't paid for is so irresistible, even for those who can afford to pay. how...revolutionary. actually, unauthorised downloads/rips are not the problem, imo. not paying for legit versions of the music you get enjoyment from is a severe problem, imo, threatening the sustainability of a lot of creative output. surely the people who feel no moral obligation to contribute to the costs of the music they enjoy need to be convinced it is in their own interest to pay a fair price for the music they enjoy listening to...

  • Hard News: It would be polite to ask,

    R v Rapira [2003] 3 NZLR 794 (CA)

    http://www.justice.govt.nz/youth/decisions/subject.asp?ppath=subject/e&parent=evidence.asp&inline=years/2003/r-v-rapira-2003-3-nzlr-794-ca.asp

The accused, led by Phillip Kaukasi, implemented a plan to rob a Pizza Hut delivery driver of food and money. On the day of the robbery the accused arranged which positions they were to take and hid a baseball bat near the address they had selected. Rawiri rang and placed the pizza order from a public phone booth. Peihopa collected the baseball bat on the way to the address. When the order arrived, Rawiri and Kurariki, who was under 14 years of age at the time, acted as customers, while the other appellants hid. Joe Kaukasi was the lookout. Peihopa struck the driver on the side of the head with the baseball bat. The appellants left the scene with the food and drink that Phillip Kaukasi and Rapira took from the delivery car. Some time after the robbery and attack, Rawiri and Lisa Waikato observed the driver staggering past. Along with Peihopa, they cut his belt bag and took money from him. The driver was unable to get assistance and died as a result of the blow.

re the kiwifruit thing, this is not the first time the industry has moved to take excess fruit out of the market. i just think they should be obliged to come up with methods that have positive benefits apart from shoring up their market. i.e. how much ethanol could be produced using a million trays of kiwifruit? could it be used to offset fossil fuel usage? if they are going to compost the fruit, it should be done to achieve maximum benefit. and finally, as mark pointed out, they could ship it (by ship) to places in the Pacific that currently do not buy any (or hardly any) kiwifruit presently, and give it away as a promotion. Maybe private donations and NZ AID could chip in for the refrigerated shipping and storage costs?
