Hard News: Nobody wanted #EQNZ for Christmas, in reply to
Seems to be an air of wry resignation; the shops are full again. My PiL currently have no water so I may be line for an improvised "do" here; better start cleaning.

Feijoa's better -- you can eat them as well as look at the flowers.

More and more pohutukawa are being planted along the coast down here, and there has always been a a few big trees in Sumer that flower every year (the one I particularly liked was by a cliff at the bottom of Clifton Hill -- haven't checked its condition lately). They do okay if they are sheltered from the frost; but the southern rata and crosses are more reliable if not as showy.
That tree in the pic was spectacular when I saw it a couple of years ago in the first few days of the year; the really deep red flowers are hard to find this far south - they tend to have an orange tint. I believe that Banks Peninsula is considered the southern limit for pohutukawa, though I would be interested to hear of (and see ) sightings further south.

It really does call for swearing this time.

Fuck and bugger. At least we were all at home and together. Good few aftershocks still going. Sirens heard in the distance here (St Martins).
Power, phones out in Brighton area. Strong in St Martins but not tragic; PiL in sumner say it was one of the strongest they have experienced but services still on there on the flat.

Holiday tick; done -- 10 days in Hanmer: swims, sleeping, books, taught the boys backgammon and ate wondrously home-built pizzas and breakfasts. Now we're back and preparing -- langorously -- for Christmas. Pre-Christmas holidays take the heat out of it all. Next is Christmas; then a long lazy summer at home in the quiet of the city, popping the tarseal bubbles while walking the dog and going to a beach.
