On a brighter note: I interviewed Holly Walker, Jan Logie and Mojo Mathers today. All very impressive (yes, I would say that), totally committed and there for the right reasons. I would love to force everyone who voted for NZF to watch those and compare them with interviews of their newbie candidates, and ask where they think those salaries are better spent. Okay, not that much of a brighter note.

But anyway, 'twas but a moment in a rather grumpy thread.
Yes, in fact the grumpiness, or rather passive-aggressiveness of much of what was said has made me rethink getting involved in such conversations. Goalposts being shifted don't help either, so one moment I think we're talking about the Labour Leadership, but in fact we're talking about the left as a whole, and then we're actually talking about the bit to the left of Labour, and then we're actually talking about societal politics rather than that stuff that happens in Wellington.
It's frustrating. I was just trying to say something about Shearer, and Labour's chances at leading a Government in 2014 and end up being categorised both in the unthinking media camp, and the ignorant middle class. It reminds me why I don't hang out here much these days. And I vote Green, FFS.

So every bit of this conversation where we've been talking about Labour's new leadership, and then National being on the back foot, and whether National will lose in 2014, and the way that the media favours them, we were talking about some other party of the left that's going to rise up and win in the next 3 years?
I can see where I went so wrong...

if you identify the left with Labour, then, sure.
In NZ, yes I do, so good then.

If people actually thought about actual issues and how it impacted them, the NACT vote would be a lot smaller
Yeah damn those 48% of NZers who aren't as smart as every one of the 10% who support what I voted for.... ;)
Maybe it's because I'm not as left as some people here (nor am I as right as other people elsewhere, and I probably vote the same as most of you anyway), but I find it hard to completely dismiss one side as being completely devoid of policy, theory, ideas and just popular because someone smiley is the leader, while the other side is an awesome policy machine with a doofus, and the media won't let them win. And that anyone other than the "1%" who would consider voting for National must be delusional, because Labour(?) is presumably the only choice a rational person in NZ society could otherwise make
I'm not trying to be glib, but it is worth pointing out that Labour ran the country for 9 years until quite recently, and that the media hasn't changed a lot in that time. So it's not that stacked against the left.
Anyway, I'm off to Welly for the last two nights of Back Benches. Nice discussin' with y'all.

I assume that you are fully aware of the irony of advocating a free-market solution to this problem
...and I assume you are aware of the chances of the Government deciding to fund it? :)

I voted for Shearer to do what’s right by my electorate, but now he’s going to be far too important and busy for any of that.
I always assume anything that needs to be done in my area will be done by the council. Those other folk are all too busy down in Wellington trying to defeat each other's plans for global domination. :)

I agree that we're not particularly well served in that regard. Although, free world, anyone should feel open to to set up a robust political periodical if they want. And these days I'd include the blogosphere, PAS, Pundit etc into the wider conversation - especially when you consider how many people read some magazines these days.
I'm sure you have your reasons for thinking so, but isn't it possible that rather than favouring the right, 'inside baseball' simply favours whichever 'team' has the most charismatic leader, and that could vary from time to time to either side? Because while you might not agree with them, there is such a thing as a serious, knotty political debate around policies promoted by the right too. It's just that at the moment they know it's easier to say, "ohhh look, there's John Key!" I'm sure Don Brash, Lindsay Perigo, and any number of Act followers would feel similarly ripped off by the MSM's shallow focus.

... or maybe I've just never been invited to those meetings where everyone is told to start promoting the Torys in a subtle-yet-pervasive manner. Maybe that's some nek-level-freemason shit that I'm not yet privvy to.

Damian, no belief in the VRWC here, just recognition of common beliefs, and interests, and therefore congruent actions.
Hmm. I guess I just see more of a disconnect between a political journo and the publisher/masthead behind them. Certainly in the newsrooms I've worked in.
