It was a dream. One of those really vivid ones you remember after you wake up and then you try and make sense of it. I was in the crowd looking around - it was a friendly crowd and I knew many of them. My impression was of an open botanical gardens type place and of a famous philosopher speaking to the crowd (wearing drapey toga-ish clothes which were not at all out of place). Then I realised it was Russell and he mentioned Public Address (which was also written in the sky in blue cloud writing if you must know). He was asking the people whether it was still a good name or should he change it? [and then I woke up so don't know the crowd's answer]

Russell, thank you for the universal mother story. And sorry again for the earlier unintentional wind up at a stressful time.
By the way, had a very strange PAS-related dream the other night set in a large garden in ancient Greece or similar and toga-ed Russell was actually addressing the PAS crowd, in a literal public address. It was sort of an AGM and he was a reknowned philosopher.
(Maybe that's how it is in a parallel universe?) -

It's quite scary, having to bust things out on the telly with not much practice in front of a panel of Maori MPs, but that's the whole point eh - gotta give it a go :)

I've also never had quite such an experience of feeling I have to justify a purchase with my own money.
Sorry, Russell, but it is 2010 and we live in a world of finite resources. I'm just struck by how, however ethical we are in other political issues and consumer decisions, there are some areas we excuse because we REALLY need the product. Not IT stuff for me, but other things (eg shoes which involve exploited animals and workers).
Let us know when you buy a gun.

What was that about asthma medications? Now I'll have to lobby Pharmac, although I approve of Pharmac in principle as a state purchasing tool challenging the power of big pharma.
Enjoying the rest of the conversation - about real life ethical consumer/ capitalist dilemmas. No simple answers but lots of useful information, and considered opinions. Generally I don't think we, as NZers, discuss ethics nearly enough.

If you say it's all too much, no one will even try. We could all make small steps by, for example, not shopping at JB Hi Fi (even if it is more convenient) and going somewhere where the workers are treated better (if there is such a place).
