OnPoint: Student Loans are Loans (Duh.), in reply to
Using one’s own experience and position as a scientist to justify more science spending
But surely we most need the views of people who actually work in a field to give us the benefit of their skills and experience?? You seem to assume that these brilliant and dedicated folk are somehow pulling a con. Why would that be the case? Don't you think it's possible that they want what we all want, for New Zealand to excel as a knowledge economy?
Bart and Lucy, hats off to you for your patience and politeness in this debate.

Gosh. That's quite a price difference!! Great you had the exam, too, and they caught the glaucoma. I think a lot of people avoid having eye tests because of the cost, goodness knows how many people walk around with serious eye diseases without knowing it until it's too late.

My current sunglasses cost $300 all up
I had to get prescription sunglasses because although my ordinary glasses can take clip-ons they're really awkward to take on and off because of the type of frame. $415, not including the exam.

Did you say a 40W bulb?? Crikey.
I like the graininess, actually. The interior looks smoky and atmospheric. :-)

one eye=longsighted/other eye= shortsighted thing
I've known several people with this problem. Apparently it's easy to tell if you put a contact in on the wrong side. :-)
It's now possible to get contacts that correct astigmatism, although they are expensive and apparently not as good as glasses vision-wise (although obviously they have other advantages). They're weighted at the bottom, so after you insert them they automatically swivel into position. Clever, huh?!

I’m astigmatic and got my first glasses about 3 years ago. I’d been mildly so for many years but not enough to justify glasses…and it had got worse without my consciously noticing. Oh what delight and amazement to suddenly be able to focus without effort! My optometrist said he was amazed I’d been managing without, as focussing was clearly a struggle.
Some of my friends expressed commiserations that I had to wear glasses, but I was like, “Are you kidding?? Now I can see !!”
The disadvantage with astigmatism is the lenses cost a fortune. When I got a new prescription last year it was almost $400 to re-use my existing frames!

Was also fascinated today to read about this "printable" house. It's a quick-to-assemble kitset created of computer-cut sheets of plywood based on a computer model. The design can be modified but the cutting itself is fully automated, making the process speedy and minimising waste.
