There is also, ultimately, an issue about appearance,...The way people treat you when they first meet you is largely based on how you look.
I concur. And from what I gather, race in the US is quite a different beast to what it is in NZ.
I think people that insist that Obama is "not-black" are ignoring (or are ignorant of) a very extreme culture of institutionalised discrimination - one that carries as much (if not more) of the foundation of modern US society as liberty or justice - thus belittling the massive cultural shift signified by electing a president of African descent.
Kiwis have a predilection for inspecting every strand of DNA to determine someone's Maoriness - I assume this is borne of a higher level of integration & interbreeding than in other bicultural societies. I think kiwis that refer to Obama as "not-black" are expressing cultural attitudes that we take for granted, but that don't apply in the US.

Watched the last episode of the last season of West Wing last night. NO THANKS TO SPOILERS, page 4. Still, cool!

If the partners had been male, you would have written "His and his partner", the ridiculousness of which might have rung a few bells in the cranium.
..and the masculine equivalent would be "Him and his partner": no less incorrect, but certainly fewer bells.

I am glad, for a while, I thought Blue and yellow mixed =green . Fuck it does as a colour but not politically.
I was just on the phone to my mum, she suggested we could pee on the blue to make it green.

Geoff:
Leonard Cohen... $142 or $172 (both + $5 fee). Maybe I have been out of the loop for live concerts, but ain't that rather a lot??
It seems a little high to me, but not completely unreasonable.
BUT for future reference: if you're booking for a gig Vector Arena, sometimes it's worth waiting until a week or two before an event - Vector have in past sold much cheaper tickets for the rafters once the decent seats are all sold out, OR you'll usually be able to buy tickets on Trademe at or below cost. Sorry for straying right off-topic, but I have to give major props to Vector for gutting the scalping industry without relying on a swathe of toothless regulations.

(dances) I am SO relieved that worked.

And my kkids love the gorilla playing the drums ad for cadbury. Whoever came up with that is a blingin' genius.
I can't for the life of me work out the appeal, but it's the coolest ad I've seen in years.
& youtube: I think the secret is to include the http and the www.

...& my first paragraph was subjected some bad cut&paste editing, "his" refers to aforementioned mark taslov.

...urg, I missed the bit where mark taslov conflated abortion & waterboarding.
