Some commentary on the mutual intelligibility of Czech and Slovak. It seems to be a classic case of a language being a dialect with an army and navy - though I doubt either the Czech or Slovak Republics have much in the way of navies, something to patrol their shares of the Danube, I'm sure, but...

So Zhou Qiyuan of the Nanjing Daily has decided that, among sheep and old people, New Zealand has a lot of birds, which are well loved by the locals. Why on Earth she was so impressed by the sight of pigeons, gulls and sparrows in downtown Wellington, I don't know. Perhaps somebody should've pointed her in the direction of this thread? Nora's done a great job of making the pigeons and gulls actually beautiful, and there are so many more birds... Mt Eden's unusual visitor of the other day, for example.
