    Paul, where was I offensive?

  • Hard News: A New Hope,

a huge band of amateur, untrained, unqualified bloggers who have swarmed over the internet pouring out columns of unsubstantiated "facts" and hysterical opinion.

Is the elephant in the room that he's absolutely fucking right?

The good is a teeeeeeeny tiny minority of the vast churning oceans of shit that make up the blogosphere.

Bad news is, even this tiny minority massively outnumbers the decent old media journalists.

    So, hmm.

It was the classic Cold Fusion mess.

This is hardly fair. Coldfusion is probably the best language I've ever used to build a website. The problem is that it's SO great and easy to use, that... ungifted... people are able to get a site that works. Get someone who knows what they're doing to use it, and you get great tools built really fast.

So you know, just saying don't blame the tools.

  • Up Front: Any Port in a Storm,

Would have had more impact if you'd actually said it was your story. As it is, I'm meant to imagine it's my story am I? Well it's not my story. My mother left my father, and brought me up in a safe loving home (and he was never violent).

Perhaps this pretense is evidence that you're still trying to escape from something.

  • Hard News: When it's Not Okay,

Last time I hit anyone I was 16, but it doesn't mean I can't sense somehow what kind of screwed up life he was leading.

Last time I hit someone was December, it was great fun afterwards, but not much fun at the time. Was in a bar, he was about 20, and he hit me out of the blue. Hopefully he'll think twice before hitting anyone else ever again.

Didn't break his back though. No kicking involved at all. And the only thrown liquid was when he spilled his wine on me as he made his very hasty "retreat" towards the floor.

No one should hit anyone, and anyone who does should expect punishment. If the talk of attempted suicide and so on are to be believed, I think that Veitch has been sufficiently punished.

  • Hard News: Our new strategy is to FAIL,

The problem is that it's far from certain there will ever be the necessary advertising revenue for YouTube and Spotify to really pay everyone.

Depends on what you mean by "everyone" (and for that matter "pay"), there's little need for lawyers, middlemen, or a corporate hierarchy when the artist & the consumer are connected with 0 degrees of separation. We now have a more sophisticated recording studio in our back pocket than the biggest bands in the world used 20 years ago.

Cost of production continues to approach zero, cost of distribution hit zero years ago. The only thing with value is creativity, and most creative people just want an audience, not 50 Bentley's and a world tour on a gold plated private jet.

There's more than enough money swilling around to make a lot of artists rich. Probably not many will get Paul McCartney or Mick Jagger rich, but is that a big deal? No, because more corporate suits were getting rich than artists anyway, and what do they even add to the mix? Shit all.

If the Music Industry types thinks things will ever go back to being the way they were, that's just too fucking bad.

    We're better off without them.

  • Hard News: Another entry in the Public…,

I hope this doesn't come across as condescending and such, but are *all* New Zealand women alarmingly good writers?

Nope, only a very small minority - just like the men.

  • Field Theory: 25 Things you need to be a…,

I can do (and have done) 20 of the 25, and I'm just as urban as the most useless of the girlymen that have posted in the thread.

It's just that I'm not bloody useless with it.

All due respect. Or whatever. Ahem.

Hadyn's additions of being able to cook a meal and navigate in a city, are bloody goods ones.

I'd like to add a couple of other things to the list:
    - Be able to jumpstart a car, and even better crash start one.
    - If you can only drive an automatic, then you're bloody useless.
    - And if you can't back up a trailer, you should at least be able to securely attach one to a towball (because, honestly, I don't give a shit if it takes you 30 minutes to get the thing up your driveway, but if it comes unfastened when you're on the motorway, it won't be a rat I kill with a spade).

And just incidentally, I reject any requirements for manliness that require killing an animal, or doing anything with an animals remains other than find a respectful way to dispose of them. Handy things when in a pinch, no doubt, but requirements? No.

(I'm bloody handy in the kitchen with whatever you like, yes I can cook a good steak, or a roast, or whatever you like really. I just don't value killing as a useful trait, so have stopped eating corpses, is all.)

The more people know about things, the more capable they'll be of getting out of a sticky situation and back to a comfortable life. Which seems bloody handy to me.

  • Hard News: Two very different topics,

Auckland - people who don't live here really really hate it.

Wellington - at least it's small enough that you can walk to the three things you want to see when you visit.

  • Hard News: Of Monsters and Old Boys,

Actually I think the 'we need to let in more sons of old boys' actually means 'there be too many asians here.'

Well sucked in to them then 'cos now there's a ton of Asian old boys. :D

  • Hard News: For Good Friday,

What on earth is that about?

It's about the bastards getting into their brains when they're young.

When I were a wee lad (Ponsonby in the 80s) you had to have a note to be excused from Friday morning Christian indoctrination. This is in a public school - Richmond Rd Primary, in fact. My mother dutifully gave me a note.

They wanted another note EVERY FUCKING WEEK.

Seriously. I still can't quite believe it. All those poor little kids, in the same room they learned how to read and write, being tricked into believing stolen lies.
