it would be decided by a panel of knowledgeable judges versed in the many corners of this countries music,
I know when I've been a judge I've (and I wasn't allowed to but it's a small country and a smaller industry) quickly found out who some of the other judges are and they tend to be fairly well chosen..there are specialists for each genre. Sometimes there is a WTF moment but it's not common.
As a PR opportunity and a celebration more power to them...

Her statements were actually true.
Sage you toddle out these lines as trusims, regardless, and I guess it's quite Roveian of you, of any regard to the truth, or show any inclination to back them.
You then get pretty badly shot down and then wander back 24 hours later and toddle out the same nonsense.
We know she lied in both her acceptance speech and the arrival speech..it's no longer a matter of conjecture.
And for you to say 'She did turn down the funding from Congress' is simply a dishonest way of using half the truth to cover up the other half of "She has not ever said, to my knowledge, that she had never supported it"
The political convenience that led to her turning it down is documented. He has finally found someone who can carry on the fight against corruption and big government.

The reason McCain chose Palin is that he recognised someone with his own integrity. Willing to take on their own party over ethics issues. Willing to take on big oil over inadequate tax.
Do you actually believe this twaddle, these half-baked slogans, seriously? I think all of us are happy to debate here, but as Paul says, you need to come with something more than simplistic sloganing.

Myself I think the Tuis and the way they are put together and the distance they've come in terms of how and what they represent are incredible..and I speak as a person who is geriatric enough to have been to 23 of them...from the drunken little parties in Logan Park circa 1980, which, mind, were great fun, to the big noisy events that the whole country takes notice of.
And substantial hats off to Adam, Ash and all the others who dragged them away from being very pleasant in-house back slapping to Vector Arena for gods sake.

God, it's a hundred bucks..either you believe that much in the record or you don't

on a nz scale that's not the lower level I was meaning by indie.
I mean on a local level. Indie has kinda shifted a few steps to the left these days with your typical a low hum type band, really doing it all themselves as in everything. highly successful too but not included in the nz music awards really, if they'd even want to be, but it would be great if they were, ie awards open to everyone.so who decides the arbitrary 'you have sold too many records to be indie' level?
someone must have paid for you simon.
X-Files was on TV back in those days wasn't it?
I think the token thing is there to ensure that you are a serious entrant, if you will. It's only $100. Hardly a barrier

McCain's speech seems to be getting a mediocre response pretty much everywhere, including the right:
-
so he or his label paid the hundred and something fee per catigory to have his works considered in the 'new zealand' music awards then. cos unless they've changed the rules you can't play if you don't pay.
the last time I submitted something, a few years back (2002), we were non-RIANZ members and all I had to do was give them 25 copies as I recall.
-
In a country as small an nz where many artists make an impact purely from their own initiatives,
Looking at the list it's pretty much all indies. The Dick Johnson album for example was, I'm pretty sure, non-RIANZ

Ssshhhhhh...don't tell Ms. Palin.....
Yeah, I think it's great to see the Nesians back in there. They are part of a great tradition of lazy, soulful, urban, reggae-ish pop that goes back to the likes of the wonderful Herbs all those years back and is so uniquely NZ Pacifica. A very cool band.
The Tuis' lineup is the strongest it's been in many years IMO.

God got name-checked (and it was that glib) so many times, I was waiting for Best Hip-Hop Album of the year to be called.
Craig, you and I may disagree somewhat from time to time but that had me rolling if only for a brief moment.
