  • Capture: City Scenes, in reply to Russell Brown,

I like the idea that there’s a container ship containing all the remaining Blue Stratos that’s been circling the Pacific since the 1970s.

    A slightly pongy Marie-Celeste...

2011 was also the year when I was lucky enough to explore two Pacific Islands, Rarotonga and Samoa. Places that time forgot:

Well, he’s learnt to respond to you quickly ;)

Ha, indeed. And that's why I chose that shot for our thank-you cards, because I like the idea of my son sticking his tongue out at dozens of our friends and whanau. Speaking of which, is Keystone still the appropriate place to find you?

If it's just my favourite photo of 2011, then it's this. But probably a lot more for the subject matter than the photo. And I'm a teensy bit biased. This was taken about two weeks ago. Harry:

Whoops! I missed that bit when I posted my city scenes last night.

Sorry, yeah I too thought the brief was street scenes.

  • Capture: City Scenes, in reply to Jonathan Ganley,

I remember reading that Ans Westra was there that day.

I didn't see her there that day, but I've often been out and about when she's been shooting in Wellington. I think we were both taking pics at the Free Burma Rally in Welly some years back. For a tall woman, she just shuffles quietly around, snapping away, I love watching her work.

And I love her work too of course. I 'discovered' her myself only 6-7 years ago really, and now own any number of her books (including Washday, which cost me a pretty penny), school journals, and thanks to an interview (transcribed here) I also have hanging in pride of place at home the third photo down on that interview - the young Maori boy singing into the edmonds baking powder tin at the front of the class, from 1963. I've got a Rollei of my own too, although I don't get to use it much these days, when I do, I love the results.

Anyone else find this a bit glitchy trying to upload pics?

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to Bart Janssen,

That’s why I believe we have an upper class, because I’ve seen the restricted entry groups in action.

I used to work at a nightclub where only certain Sneetches could get in. And it had fuck all to do with money, class, race or anything other than whether you had the right attitude. Complete fucking wank of course, but it was fun and everyone was happy and on E, and the rest of the time they were bitching about each other.

Point is, class or no class, we will always try and find ways of restricting each other on various bases. Money may sometimes be one of those, other times breeding, other times race, or simply how 'cool' you are.

But yes, I have a very wealthy friend - like Rich List rich - and I never felt quite so alienated as when he and his other wealthy friends were discussing which families owned the houses in a certain holiday resort, and they all knew who those families were (I didn't) etc. Still, didn't stop us hanging out together, but then I wonder what occasions I'm not getting invited to. I don't lose any sleep over it though. I'm sure they're dicks.
