It's called a "Exaltation" of Westham Fans

Holcrofts writing is really good. I couldn't imagine seeing such writing in any weekly magazine from NZ anymore. The Listener is a bit of a worry isn't it except for Wide Area News of course! The editorial is usually worth reading though, just for some aspects of issues that I might not been exposed to. But I don't bother with Joanne Blacks contributions, it is just uninteresting and even wrong headed (eg. the speeding issue). While I didn't agree with Steve Braunias a lot of the time he was interesting to read and could bolt some good sentences together. It didn't hurt that he was a Westham United fan.
Did Hocroft retire to Bulls, or is that my so-called memory playing me false?

13 years? did they have electricity back then?
Well when he says online, it was one of those string and pulley things with clothes pegs on it and you can whisk notes from one end of the office quicker than walking.

The brother who was on Campbell Live did no-one any favours. It sounds like the usual ugly drunk scenario.
If there was racism involved it should be publically examined. The driver has no excuse but it would be a good idea to find out how things like this start. It could be that there is something about that text message that points to some racist culture in our youth. -
merc, I like the cave. I think surfing through it would be another story in the "Injuries" thread tho'. I realise that this might not mean much as I could write my knowledge of poetry on a stamp however I think your stuff is very good.
Riddley, O shaven Guinea pig I do not think that your post would have made any difference as leaving a forum is usually a cumulative result (take it from one who's left a forum after near 2,000 posts). It is sad however and I really hope that D comes back.

The occurence of fighting at parties is by no means new. I loved the report I read of the battle between Town and Gown in Oxford circa 1500 when people were actually killed.
What we have had here could have happened in any NZ town, I feel. The way we teach our kids to drink and party will end up this way at some stage. We can dress it up as inappropriate anger response but it comes down to an acceptance of violence that when mixed with alcohol leads to violent action.
I can remember, as a university student, working in a grocery warehouse for the holidays when one of the guys was having troubles at home. His wife had just had a baby and PND was happening. Some of his workmates suggested that his wife needed a "good hiding'. White, middle class workmates in the 1980's.
It is all around us and won't go away with tinkering (much as I would love to ban cell-phones). The level of intervention that Ron Mark was talking about on the radio yesterday in relation to gang activities is the sort of thing that will be needed, but not just Marks' simplistic "string 'em up" ideas. Real programmes to change the lives of these kids, and possibly their parents, and show them that there is a better way. -
That is a bad outcome. I hope she reconsiders because it is a good place that Bishop Brown of the All- Seeing Carpet Slippers, has made.
As for being an insurance gent, I would put a low premium on that.
